MYP UPDATE

In homage to World Literacy Day, I would like to take a moment to celebrate our young charges and their journey to becoming veritable polyglots. With proficiency being developed in over 3 languages in the MYP, students here at SWA are well on the way to a deeper understanding and awareness of intercultural connections and international mindedness. Our upcoming assembly will celebrate just that and serve as a reminder that literacy goes beyond the written word into the realm of visual and digital media. This week we shall be celebrating the wonderful world of literacy with a finale that includes a performance by our very own Timbre!

And to add to that, we invite our entire school community to explore the wonderful displays created by students from Early Years and Elementary School through to our graduating class, in honour of World Peace Day. The lobby will be transformed into a celebration of peace, featuring the G9–G12 art exhibition “Peaceful Coexistence”, alongside “Nurturing Nature” and “Uniting Nations” class displays inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the values of peace, sustainability, and global understanding.

Celebrating Our Cambridge IGCSE June 2026 Results
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our students in the Cambridge IGCSE June 2026 examination series.
This year, 72% of all IGCSE entries were awarded grades A or A*, while 95% achieved grades B or above. In addition, 57% of students achieved at least one A*.
Several students delivered especially outstanding individual performances:
Richard Chang – 7 A*
Yik Yan Wong – 6 A* and 1 A
Zhenxuan Qiao – 6 A* and 1 A
Chloe The Muryadi – 5 A* and 2 A
Adriana Katya Husen – 2 A*, 4 A and 2 B
We are also delighted that six students received the Cambridge ICE award at Distinction level, recognising excellent performance across a broad range of subjects.
Using the latest published Cambridge world averages, our June 2026 results compare very favourably: 72% of our IGCSE entries achieved grades A or A, 25 percentage points above the world average of 47%.
Strong performance was seen across the curriculum, particularly in Mathematics, Sciences and Languages. Our students achieved especially strong results in Additional Mathematics, Computer Science, Chinese Language & Literature and English Language & Literature, while Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Indonesian Language & Literature also performed notably above the latest available world benchmarks.
We warmly congratulate all of our students on their success and thank our teachers and parents for their support throughout the examination journey.

The last few weeks have been busy, with students completing summative assessments in reading and writing.
Grade 10 ELA is exploring propaganda in the media. Students recently had fun persuading classmates to join invented movements, from serious topics such as maintaining a healthy weight to ridiculous ideas such as a five-day weekend.
Grade 9 ELA students have been analysing themselves and their identities as they consider how they might brand themselves on social media.
Grade 7 ELA has completed reading exercises to prepare for their summative, which they have just finished.
Grade 6 ELL students have written and performed comedy based on the literal misunderstanding of idioms.
Everyone is looking forward to Literacy Day later this week and its competitions. We look forward to seeing you there!
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

G7 Digital Design class explored the Statement of Inquiry: “The structure and security of networks influence how information is transmitted, protected, and accessed between connected devices.” Through their summative task, Network in a Box: How Does Data Travel?, students became Network Designers and Technology Communicators. They designed and constructed 3D network dioramas to make the invisible process of data transmission visible and interactive. Using materials such as cardboard, LEGO, string, recycled materials and LEDs, students demonstrated how data travels between a sender and receiver across a LAN. Their models included networking devices such as switches, routers, access points or servers, alongside physical data packets showing transmission direction. Students also demonstrated data reception, acknowledgement and verification, while identifying network security threats and protection methods. This hands-on experience strengthened students’ understanding of network structure, communication, accessibility and cybersecurity.

Activity Introduction – G10 CLA 4–6
G10 CLA 4-6 class is doing an oral presentation activity. This speaking activity focuses on the topic of Beijing Siheyuan (traditional Chinese courtyard houses). Students will review the architectural features of Siheyuan and explore how architecture reflects Chinese culture. Through peer questioning and discussion, students will practice expressing their ideas, giving reasons, asking follow-up questions, and responding to others. The activity is designed to strengthen students’ speaking and interaction skills and help them prepare for the Summative assessment.

Grade 9 ILA: Exploring Identity Through Family
As part of the unit “Me and My Family", Grade 9 Indonesian Language Acquisition (ILA) students explored the inquiry statement, “Family plays a very important role in shaping one’s identity.”
Students delivered presentations introducing themselves and their families while sharing cultural traditions and practices that are meaningful within their family life. They also reflected on how family values, traditions, and experiences have influenced who they are today.
Through this learning experience, students not only developed their Indonesian speaking and presentation skills but also made meaningful connections between language, culture, family, and personal identity.
INDIVIDUALS & SOCIETIES DEPARTMENT

Grade 6 students have begun their MYP Individuals & Societies journey by exploring what it means to be a global citizen in an interconnected world. They have examined how human achievements can contribute to global and local issues and analysed their causes, consequences and possible solutions. Through discussions, real-world examples and source analysis, students explored human and children’s rights, responsibilities, environmental challenges, deforestation and plastic pollution. They have also begun developing research skills by formulating questions for their own investigations.
Grade 9 Global Perspectives students have focused on analysing sources, arguments and evidence in preparation for the Written Exam. Through topics including arts in society, changes in culture and communities, and conflict and peace, students are developing critical thinking skills and learning to form well-supported judgements using reliable evidence.

These next 2-3 weeks are filled with wonderful opportunities for students and parents, as we have a host of universities visiting SWA. These are highly valuable experiences, as they provide first-hand insights and guidance from the university representatives.
