Infant Literacy
Written by Ms. Ruby
"Every babbling word, every curious gaze, is a step towards a lifetime of learning."
Infants were exposed to a myriad of stimulating experiences aimed at fostering their early literacy development. Through a creative and engaging approach, teachers and caregivers utilised a diverse range of techniques, including songs, dances, and various sensory activities, to introduce infants to the world of letters and language.
One of the techniques employed was the incorporation of letter-themed songs and rhymes like Jolly Phonics. Teachers would sing catchy tunes that not only entertained the infants but also introduced them to the sounds and shapes of letters. These songs were designed to be repetitive, allowing infants to internalise the rhythmic patterns and associate them with specific letters.
By integrating songs, dances, and sensory activities like sandpaper letters and big books, teachers provided Infants with numerous opportunities to explore, play, and interact with letters, fostering their language acquisition and laying a solid foundation for future reading and writing skills.

In today's world, energy conservation has become increasingly important. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to be mindful of our energy consumption and find ways to reduce it. Grade 1 students can actively contribute to an energy awareness campaign through a fun and educational activity: creating picture graphs of their home appliances.
Picture graphs are visual representations of data using pictures or symbols. They provide an engaging and understandable way to present information. By creating picture graphs, students can gain insights into which appliances consume the most energy and learn how to make informed choices to conserve energy.
The process begins with a discussion among classmates about the different appliances they have at home. Common examples include refrigerators, televisions, computers, washing machines, and air conditioners. With parental permission, students can survey their homes and note down the number of each appliance, collecting data for their picture graphs.
With drawing materials in hand, students use their creativity to represent each appliance with a simple, recognisable picture or symbol. For instance, a small refrigerator can be drawn to represent the refrigerator, a TV screen for the television, or a laptop for the computer. The number of pictures or symbols drawn for each appliance corresponds to the data collected earlier.
By actively participating in this activity, Grade 1 students develop a better understanding of their energy usage and gain the knowledge and skills needed to make sustainable choices. Let us appreciate the efforts of these young students as they contribute to a brighter and more environmentally friendly future for all.

Grade 3 ICT
Written by Mr. Ciaran
This term, grade 3 explored the world of coding by developing a variety of different styles of games using Scratch. For one activity, students developed a version of Flappy Bird, requiring them to program their sprites to constantly drop unless the player kept them airborne with the spacebar.
In another, they were required to create a maze game in which players had to guide their sprites from the entrance to the finish. The students also learned to create a game called ‘fish chomp’ in which a larger sprite earned points by consuming smaller ones.
Finally, the class applied their skills to create animated programs conveying messages of thanks to their teachers for their efforts over the year. Well done in particular to team ‘What!’, the final winners of our class competition (Azka, Malika, Brian, Edith, and Beatrice).
Thank you for all your hard work this year, Grade 3. It has been a fun year!
Jennifer’s ‘design your hero’ program, including a mini-game.
Beatrice’s Pong game allowed the paddle to be controlled with the touchpad, and recorded the player's score using a variable.
Grade 4 Music
Written by Mr. Freddy
Grade 4 students have made amazing progress in their musical skills and knowledge, including instrumental proficiency and note reading. Their hulusi skills developed much better, even though this is their first year of learning to play the instruments. During this semester, they have demonstrated the application of their musical knowledge and skills in several hulusi ensemble performances at our school events. During the ES Kartini Day Assembly, the Grade 4 students performed a traditional song both from Indonesia and Philippines by singing and playing hulusi instruments. They were very happy to share their ideas on how they were going to present their performances with specific movements and arrangements.
They also performed a more difficult piece of Chinese Music entitled Qing Hua Ci by Jay Chou during the SWA Open House this term 4. They practised so hard because the notes are complicated and many, and they had to memorise it for better pitch and tempo accuracy. Through all those performances, they learned to improve not only their musical skills but also their collaborative skills and communication skills, including non-verbal communication through music interpretation and expression during their performance.
They will combine the Qing Hua Ci song with Sakura and Arirang from Japan and Korea to create an Asian Music Medley that they have prepared for their coming performance in the SWA ES Recognition Day Assembly on June 2023. They have been practising during this term 4 to prepare for that. Besides vocal and hulusi practice, they also explore more creativity by making their own simple instruments from recycled things. They enjoyed and had fun with those activities while developing a deeper understanding of how things produce organised sounds.

"Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." Nelson Mandela
This quote from Nelson Mandela embodies the theme for G5 this year, “Perseverance”. In addition to their academics, G5 learned valuable other lessons. They learned that life isn’t always fair, but you have to keep going. They learned that things don’t always end up the way you want them to, but you have to keep fighting. They learned that collaboration and teamwork provide some security and strength in numbers. They realised that no matter how difficult things may be at times, they must find the strength, courage and resolve to never give up. Through Covid masks, earthquakes and a strict homeroom teacher, G5 grew individually and collectively this year. They welcomed four new classmates with open arms and made them feel at home. They are a spirited mix of personalities and cultures that fuse seamlessly together to create an amazing class. G5, I am really proud of you, will miss you and will be rooting for you as you embark on your middle school journey! Keep learning, keep growing and keep your positive spirit.
