EY ES Share a Box of Hope Drive
Written by Ms. Kelly
There is an old saying “Sharing is Caring”. At SWA, sharing is definitely one of the fundamental values we would like to teach our children. Teaching students how to care is not confined to books and stories alone. Values need to be applied in practical ways and students must be provided opportunities to immerse themselves in the true spirit of sharing.
“Share a Box of Hope Drive” was launched last December in the EY ES community and we are pleased to see the overwhelming response. Within two weeks, we received more than hundreds of donations from different families. This is definitely one of the best holiday gifts to the children who need extra support.
Below is the summary of donations for “Share a Box of Hope Drive”:
378 packs of instant noodles
101 (l) of cooking oil
34 bags of rice
79 packs of toothpaste
83 bags of sugar
30 boxes of milk
2 bottles of syrup
3 packs of margarin
Even though not all the children in EY ES can physically visit the orphanages to send out the donations, we ensure that they are included in the sorting process so that they can feel the happiness that comes from sharing and understand the importance of being kind.
ES students busy sorting the donations at the Admin Office.
With the amount of donations we received from the drive, we were able to distribute the items to three different orphanages: Yayasan Abhimata, Panti Asuhan Mekar Lestari, and Panti Asuhan Suaka Kasih Bunda.
A huge THANK YOU to our beloved EY ES Community. What a great way to share during the festive season!
Japan Cultural Programme
Written by Ms. Rhea
The annual Japan Cultural Programme is back with a different set of activities. Aside from exploring the country’s culture through play, arts, and crafts, a Japanese guest will also teach Nihongo and basic calligraphy in a face-to-face session.
We are excited to continue working with Sagami Women’s University Elementary School (Tokyo, Japan) who will also take part in the programme. While more and more people are travelling now, SWA ensures that opportunities for international education are provided in and outside the school. We hope a lot of the ES students can join this year!
Registration ends on January 16th, 2023. For more information please see the attached poster or contact the ES Admin Office for queries (eyes_admin@swa-jkt.com).

The EY students were unstoppable and it was indeed a great show as the moment that the EY community had anticipated has finally come: the Semester 1 Celebration of Learning with the theme “Holiday Carnival of Music.” It was highlighted by marvelous student performances from across all levels at the Trini Dewi Theatre. The effort, which everybody put in, was all worth it as it was a well-applauded production.
It was followed by class exhibits at the Wayang Building, which showcased the milestones of the students during the first semester. The day was capped off with class parties where the students shared packed goodies and stories with each other. It was a great day to culminate the first half of the school year and the best way to kick off the holiday season!

The ES Holiday Concert was held on December 15th, 2022 at Trini Dewi Theatre. It was a long awaited event after the pandemic struck in 2020. The theme of the event was “Embracing New Beginnings, New Horizons”. The Grade 3 students who were in captive by the wicked wizard in the play entitled, “The Wizard Vs Kids” were freed using the magic of joy and happiness from various performances. It was a fun holiday treat watching the ES students - song numbers, pianica playing, round song using a recorder, hulusi performance, and ukulele playing. A great new year was promised at the end of the play. Santa came to the scene to give out gifts to the good boys and girls and the concert was then wrapped up with a cheerful finale song entitled, “At Three O’Clock Rehearsal” performed by all students from Grades 1-5.

The ES Project Exhibition was held on December 15th, 2022. The students showed their amazing research projects and experiments. The project exhibition allowed the students to showcase what they learned in different interdisciplinary areas.
Some exceptional students stood out during their presentations and were able to explain their projects well.

The theme for the G1 project was, “Farming”. They made a scientific enquiry, observation, and experimentation on “What do plants need in order to grow?”. The students set up simple practical enquiries and did comparative analyses. They also observed and explained why some plants died and why some were green in colour.
The theme for the G2 Project was “Weather and Seasons”. The students made a weather experiment and related their experiments to what they learnt about the weather. Some students created a tornado, drizzle, raincloud, and explained the water cycle using a model. They also created a poem about weather.
The Grade 3 theme was “Planet Earth”. To help the planet Earth, the G3 students were challenged to create a gift for a friend from recycled plastic materials. Beverly turned the plastic bags into bracelets. Arin created a musical instrument and a water dispenser using old plastics. Jesslyn turned the old milk bottle and dried twigs into a bird feeder. The students also learned to gather data as they asked the other students from different grade levels about their plastic usage at school. Then they presented the results in a graph. They also visited the Tzu Chi recycling center, where the students learned about how plastic waste can be made into clothes, shoes, and many other products.
The theme for G4 was “Environment” with a sub-theme of air pollution. The students researched the cause and effects of air pollution on living things and the environment. They made an information campaign about air pollution. Most students created a model to show the causes of air pollution and its effect on the environment. Bella created a working model to show how factories contributed a lot in air pollution. While Maurice builds an air filter that could help in solving air pollution.
The G5 theme, just like G4, was “Environment” but with focus on water pollution. The students researched the cause and effects of water pollution. They were challenged to build an efficient water filter system that will produce clear water. Aradhya’s water filter system produced the clearest water. Some students were also successful in producing clear water such as Xin Yi and Claire. Vincent’s display board and presentation were awesome!
ES Sports Day

Last December, the Elementary School had their annual sports day. It was a time to showcase their prowess and abilities namely in Tee Ball (kids baseball) and swimming. Elang made a great start by dominating the Tee Ball games. They easily beat their opponents by being able to follow the amazing strategies implemented by their coach. Their willingness to follow and trust the plays created by the coach helped them beat Gajah in the finals. In the swimming competition, it was Gajah who won most of the games by winning 3 out of the 4 swimming events. Komodo came in second consistently followed by Paus then Elang. After all of the events in semester 1, Gajah is the runaway leader in total points with a commanding 105 point lead over the 2nd place team which is a tie between Paus and Komodo.

Grade 1 Field Trip
Written by Ms. Junita
Grade 1 students were excited to have the field trip to D’Kandang Amazing Farm last December 12th, 2022. The objective of the trip was to explore the life of the farm animals and there were a lot of fascinating activities that everyone enjoyed. As soon as the students arrived, they fed the kids (baby goats). While feeding, they also touched and interacted with the animals.
The students were also challenged to ride a horse around the farm. The guide informed them that they shouldn’t walk behind the walking horse as it can kick them. Everyone loved horse riding and the students’ patience while waiting for their turn was truly impressive. Another interesting activity was visiting the cows. Students milked and fed the cows in their cowshed.
The students did not only learn about animals but also how to plant seedlings. They eagerly dug the soil to fill up their plastic seedling bag, and then inserted the seedlings inside. Last but not the least, they got a brief explanation about the tortoise and had a chance to visit the rabbit’s burrow.

It was an amazing day for Grade 4 as they visited the Jakarta Sea World in Ancol. The students finally got to go out and experience having a field trip in person after spending the last 2 years doing virtual field trips in school. They had a blast seeing the different types of sea creatures and learning their habits and tendencies while in their own habitat. They enjoyed observing the different types of fishes especially during the feeding show where they saw stingrays, turtles, and sharks. It was an awesome experience and a great way to end semester 1.
Grade 5 Field Trip

Grade 5 had a sweet time visiting the Taman Wisata Lebah Bee Farm. Finally after two years due to the pandemic, everyone was very excited and happy to get the opportunity to experience an active outdoor field trip. Starting with the bus ride, there was a buzz of anticipation, you could feel the energy and joy. Soon after arriving, we were greeted by our friendly host to start us on our tour. Our guide began with 10 minutes of history and overall knowledge about Taman Wisata Lebah and told us what to expect on our tour. Up next, we headed to the mini theatre to watch a short film to learn more about bees. Then we headed to see the real action. Carefully, we got to see the honey making process and even the Queen Bee, giving orders to all the worker bees. And then, drink some sweet honey water, oh yeah! To finish the fun, we had lunch and enjoyed the beautiful day playing outside in the play area. What a great way to finish up the first semester!
