The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. On this full moon night, Chinese people have had various customs since ancient times, such as family reunions, watching the bright moon, admiring lanterns, and tasting mooncakes. These activities all imply a sense of complete happiness and auspiciousness and also express people's wishes for a better future.
In order to welcome this festive festival, SWA students from Early Year, Elementary School, and Middle School not only learned about the legends, stories, customs, activities, etc. of the Mid-Autumn Festival but also participated in various activities such as making lanterns and mooncakes by themselves, drawing Mid-Autumn Festival manuscripts, etc.

Parents' Korean Cooking Class
In the midst of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, Koreans also observe Chuseok Day, which falls on 28 September this year and is celebrated as Korean Thanksgiving Day. Koreans mark Chuseok by preparing special foods, notably a certain type of rice cake known as songpyeon
To commemorate this occasion, SWA parents gathered in the Masterchef kitchen at the DT Building for a fun cooking class, where they learned how to make authentic bibimbap and the traditional songpyeon rice cake.
It was such a joyous occasion where friendships were nurtured, and teamwork strengthened the bond among parents as they embarked on a culinary journey together, creating delicious dishes and embracing cultural diversity in a meaningful way.
Stay tuned for the next parents' cooking class edition!

First stop: Let’s get moving and drink water.
Why do kids need to be hydrated?
Hydration is essential for people of all ages, including kids, because water plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being. Here are some reasons why kids need to be hydrated:
Proper bodily functions
Digestion, absorption of nutrients, and the elimination of waste products work well when you are fully hydrated
Cognitive function
Dehydration can decrease cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention, and concentration, which can affect a child's learning and performance in school.
Physical performance
Dehydration can lead to decreased endurance, muscle cramps, and reduced physical performance.
Growth and development
Water is essential for the growth and development of a child's body. It supports the formation of new cells and tissues, aids in nutrient transport, and helps maintain healthy skin.
Immune function
Adequate hydration is crucial for a robust immune system. It helps transport immune cells and antibodies throughout the body, increasing the body's ability to fight off infections.
Preventing dehydration
Children can become dehydrated more quickly than adults because they have a higher metabolic rate and may not always recognize thirst or communicate it effectively.
Encouraging children to drink water regularly and consume hydrating foods (e.g., fruits and vegetables) is essential for maintaining their health and well-being. It is particularly crucial during hot weather, physical activity, and illnesses when their fluid needs may increase.
Congratulations to the Readers of the month!

SWA Literacy Programme
Your partner in building a strong foundation in English literacy skills is here. Join the SWA Literacy Programme! The SWA Literacy Programme features JOLLY PHONICS for ages 3-6. It is a comprehensive programme that employs a child-centred and multisensory approach to teaching the 42 sounds of the alphabet, which motivates children to build words as early as possible.
The programme is also offered to Elementary School students aged 7-11 years old. In this programme, literacy skills, (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), are further developed through exposure to stories of various genres. The language exercises are combined with activities that focus on comprehension skills (eg. summarising, inferencing, comparing and contrasting) that they can apply to all reading situations.
