After two successful weeks of transition to the new academic year, the ES students have settled into the full face-to-face learning routine. Students were all thrilled to join their chosen activities, like the Kids Aerobics, Chinese Culture, Kidspreneurship, Library Club, and many more. It was definitely an action-packed week and we can't wait to see more events and celebrations in the month of September. Stay tuned and get excited for the SWAmazing year!
ES TALENT SHOW
Written by Mr. Marc
Yes, SWA ES students have talent! Congratulations to all 11 performers at last week's epic ES Talent Show in the newly opened Koi Black Box Theatre. And a great big congratulations to Aradhya from Grade 5 who won the competition and many prizes by singing and dazzling the crowd! The other performers were: Darrell, David, Madeline, Jet, Angel, Jeslyn, Aarohi, Arin, Beverly, and Jennifer with different acts such as piano, dancing, singing and drums. The show had lots of help from a slew of SWA's teams, including: Maintenance Team, IT Team, Security Team, and the Cleaning Team. Three SWA employees judged the contest: Mr. Jay, Ms. Michelle, and Mr. A-Z. A big thank you to Ms. Nathania and Mr. Freddy for guiding music development and instilling a love of music, thank you to all the students’ private music teachers for their instruction, and we even got to borrow one of Mr. Freddy’s amps! Most of all, thank you to the parents for believing in and supporting music in their children. There was even a surprise guest performance by SWA's very own Grade 10 band, "The Misfits". It was a grand event, indeed. Let’s hear it one more time for all the courageous and talented performers who performed onstage at the SWA ES Talent Show.
Get your talents ready, because the next ES Talent Show Auditions will be held in February.
EY AND ES LITERACY DAY
Written by Ms. Mary Ann and Mr. Jay
The Early Years just concluded the International Literacy Day celebration with the theme, “Transforming Learning Literacy Spaces.” The celebration kicked off with every class listening to read aloud stories from the different authors of children’s storybooks. Creative artworks like elephant, goose, caterpillar, tree, and gruffalo were artistically created by students after the storytelling. K1’s and K2’s also did a fantastic drawing and painting during the poster making activity.
One of the highlights of this event was the Mystery Guest Storyteller. Grace from grade 5 brought everyone to listen to the story entitled, “Handa’s Surprise” by Eileen Browne. The children were delighted to identify the fruits and animals they saw in the book.
The colourful book inspired costumes of the EY students gave so much meaning to this event. The children confidently walked on the stage to showcase the costume and their book.
Congratulations to the winners of the Poster Making!
K1 Kindness - Elise and Louisa
K2 Honesty – Cloudera, Phoenix, Yasa, Kaiden
The ES literacy Day has rolled around and this year we all got a taste of some great reading. Literacy Day is a festive event celebrated around the globe with the goal of encouraging reading and fostering a love of reading in your kids. In the ES we celebrated Literacy day with a plate full of fun events. First, students got a full corse meal of reading different stories in short intervals, circling clockwise around a table set with varying genres. Students would read for a few minutes getting a mouthful and then quickly munching on the next adventure. It was a great way for everyone to get exposed to all the amazing types of stories. After they finished reading, they then were able to express if they liked the book or not by placing stickers on the whiteboard about the story they read.
Additionally, there was a 24 hour "readathon" challenge. Each grade was given 24 hours to read as many hours on Razkids (as a collective class), with the winning class getting a special reward. In a surprise upset, Grade 1 came out on top, easily winning the contest! Congrats to Grade 1! Excellent Job!
What a fantastic EY and ES Literacy Day! Let's all continue to enjoy the wonders of literature!
TODDLER - LITERACY
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
One of the most interesting things about the development of language in children is that it is closely related to play. For Toddlers, they started exploring letters through different activities that required them to touch, observe, wonder, and explore. They were exposed to learning the letters /s/, /a/, and /t/. We read books like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. Aside from the language that the children learnt, they also practised hand-eye coordination, fine motor, and gross motor skills.
NURSERY - MATHEMATICS
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
In Maths, the Nursery children learnt the primary and secondary colours. This topic helped them strengthen their Maths skills, and likewise boosted their language acquisition. One of the activities that the children did was to attach colours to real objects. They showed impressive skills in associating these colours and identifying them. They also used different media in mixing and creating the secondary colours. Additionally, we read the famous stories, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See” and “Mouse Paint” to further master these concepts.
Early identification of colours helps to create the cognitive link between visual cues and words.
PRE- KINDERGARTEN - UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
Written by Ms. Ruby
In Understanding the World, the PreK children learnt about My Family. They explored through various sensory materials to further improve their fine motor skills while learning about different family members. They were excited doing the, "Bathe the Baby" activity. They also enjoyed listening to nursery songs related to family like the “Finger Family'' song.
“Where there is family, there is love.” Unknown
KINDERGARTEN 1 - INDONESIAN LANGUAGE
Written by Ms. Yuyun
The Kindergarten 1 students had a wonderful time learning about the concept of a "family" (Keluarga) during their Indonesian Language class. They identified the different members in a family and also excitedly shared stories about their own families. To further encourage them to confidently speak the language, the K1's made a 2D house and people cutouts that represented their own "rumah" and "keluarga" and talked about who lives in their house and what each member contributes for the family. It was truly amusing to listen to their stories!
KINDERGARTEN 2 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Written by Ms. Sherly
We are happy to welcome our EY students back into the school gym. In the first week of school, K2 children started with reviewing the rules and expectations in PE so that everyone can stay safe while doing the activities. Then they continued working on locomotor movements such as running, skipping, and galloping. Fitness Tests were also introduced to K2 students, including flexibility, speed, and endurance tests. K2 enjoyed doing the flexibility test by doing the Sit and Reach test. After doing the test, they continued learning and playing new games with their classmates. The children and teachers are excited for a great and healthy year ahead!
GRADE 1 - SCIENCE
Written by Ms. Evi
During Term 1, Grade 1 students learnt about useful and harmful animal and plants with additional activities to deepen students understanding and allow them to apply the concepts learnt. The process skills applied during the lesson include analyzing, communicating, evaluating, generating possibilities, inferring and observing. For example, the process skills, analyzing, communicating, observing and inferring, students are guided to conclude that some animals give us food and we need animals for materials to make the things that we use in our daily lives. Students also got to discuss and find out what types of food can cause food allergies and diarrhea. As for observation skills, G1 students played a guessing game where the assigned student described the movement of an animal The rest of the class should identify what the student is imitating.
G1 students also studied useful and harmful plants and got to know parts of plants. A simple germination experiment with the mung bean was conducted by the students. This study showed the basic process of emerging a new plant from seeds under favorable conditions including water. Great job Grade 1!
GRADE 2 - INDONESIA LANGUAGE

Writing is Fun! This week the Grade 2 students started to learn how to write a good paragraph. They filled in ideas in a paragraph about "Yourself". They made a puzzle about themselves and put it together in front of everyone so that they could also see what their friends are interested in. They wrote their identity, their hobbies, even what they liked and disliked. This activity helped them to promote their creative writing in building a simple paragraph. It is a milestone for the Grade 2 students. We started simple but we will continue further with more creative and exciting writing exercises using personal experiences next week. Cannot wait!

Since the beginning of Term 1, the Grade 4 Music students have been preparing for their Mid Autumn performance as their collaborative project between Music and Chinese subjects. Related to the unit of this term, A World Filled with Love, cultural festivals like Chinese Mid Autumn is giving every family an opportunity to share their love with each family member by celebrating the festival, making special cuisine, and having dinner together. Playing music together with friends at school is also developing not only musical and collaborative skills, but also inclusiveness and solidarity in the class. They also practiced improving their affective skills through every rehearsal. In this project, the Grade 4 students learnt how to play a classic Chinese song entitled Ming Yue Qian Li Ji Xiang Shi with the pianica instrument in A minor. They will also sing a triple-time Chinese song entitled Yue Meng Long Niao Meng Long in F major with some simple choreography. Both of the songs will be performed as part of the G4 drama performance organized by the Chinese Department, the story is about Hou Yi and Chang Er to be presented on Friday, August 8th, 2022 in our ES Mid Autumn celebration assembly. GRADE 5 - MATHEMATICS
Written by Mr. Christian
Worksheets are part of student's school requirement and activities in class. It is often dreaded paperwork and an additional task for the students. But how do we make it fun and/or engaging? By putting several elements of play, puzzle and art forms. Grade 5 students did exactly that. They did a calculator crossword, prime number path, (a mouse to cheese adventure path), andartwork with numbers. The calculator crossword prove several "EUREKA" moments. Who would have thought that a number sentence would yield hidden words. Just key in the number sentence, find the answer, turn your calculator upside down and a word will arise.
Learning Math is not just about drills, but also doing the simplest and fun tasks while unconsciously applying Math concepts. It makes the task more suitable for classroom learning. Engaging the students in these kinds of tasks will boost their confidence and participation in classroom activities. They will then look forward to the next worksheet.
