Girls Golf 2021 Information

Hi Golfers,

Welcome to the 2021 season, here is some detailed information on Girls Golf Tryouts, important dates and registration info.

Registration

Here is the link to register.

You need a current physical and registration to participate on 4/19 When both of those are turned into the office, you will receive a green card that you will need to turn into me on the first day of tryouts.

Important Dates & Information

You can find season date information on our little google site https://sites.google.com/svvsd.org/eriegolf/home

On the website is our Golf Calendar which you can also find here https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=svvsd.org_dn33lt8qfsfp6vp7cqh6v3bkcs%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FDenver

Just remember that with spring golf, it's likely that many of these dates will change.

Tryout Information

We will be having tryouts. I'm going to try and set it up the same as what we did for the boys team; however, that may be difficult due to weather/daylight/course availability.

Golf tryouts will be held promptly at 3:15 pm on Monday, April 19th and Tuesday, April 20th. At Saddleback Golf Course. Practices will be at Colorado National, but we are trying to host tryouts at Saddleback.

The Cost for tryouts is $30. Please have this at the time you arrive at the course. More info will come on this.

I have been asked by multiple people about a refund if the player does not make the team. Yes, the athletic department will refund your registration fee or you can use it if you plan on playing another sport.

In the event that weather does not cooperate with tryout dates, we will continue to delay the cutdown until after we give the chance for all golfers to be evaluated on the course. That means they could be on the team for a couple of weeks hitting balls in the gym, until we have a chance to evaluate every golfer. I will keep everyone in the loop.

Tryout details:

April 19th

  • Players arrive at 3 pm

  • Meeting from 3:15-3:22 take attendance, go over the tryout process and put players into their tryout groups.

  • 3:22-4:07 pm Players swings will be graded on the range and the will keep score during certain putting and chipping drills.

  • 3:43 pm The first group will tee off and the rest of the groups will rotate through 1 of the three graded drill stations until their designated tee times.

  • Around 6:15 Players will be finishing rounds. Every player will sit around finishing hole until all players have finished. We may have a quick meeting following the round.

April 20th

  • Same Practice schedule as day before. with variations in drill types

  • Following Tryouts, I will meet one on one with each player to let them know whether they have made the team or not. All players that have made the team will need to stick around for a quick meeting following practice.

Good Things to Know and Work on before Tryouts:

One of the drills we will be doing is a 3 foot circle drill for putting. Players will be asked to attempt a number of putts around the hole and then will record their makes. Here is an exact video outlining the 3 foot circle drill we will be doing.

There will be chipping drills from different areas where players will be asked to do a number of chips and will record the amount of times they get the ball inside of three feet. (Or some similar variation)

Swings will be graded on accuracy, distance and mechanics.

Putting Green drill scores, Chipping area scores, range scores and 2 nine hole scores will be combined to make up their tryout score with the nine hole scores holding most of the weight. We will be keeping approximately 10 players. The nice thing about golf is is pretty objective in that your score is your score and there is no faking that. The downside is players that have a bad week might now be able to make the team.

PLEASE wear appropriate golf attire. Do not wear jeans or jean shorts, swimming trunks, sweat pants or flip flops.

Finally, if you are a freshman or sophomore and don't make the team, DON'T GIVE UP! I shot a 102 my freshman year at tryouts and was cut because 13 guys shot better than I did. I kept working on my game and eventually played and lettered in varsity golf. Golf is a lifelong sport and a sport that tests players to the highest mental degree!

For communication purposes I will primarily send out updates via email; however, I will also use twitter for quick updates @ErieGolf. You can always see that feed if you don't have an account on our Golf Website. https://sites.google.com/svvsd.org/eriegolf/home

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'm excited for the season, feel free to share this information with anyone else you might know who is interested in joining our golf team!

Happy Birdies,

Brandon Bird
