What will happen if the problem isn’t fixed? Currently over 250 million people live in the Amazon rainforest and Savannah areas. They depend on the income for the food they can afford. Did you know that over 80% of plants and animals live in rainforests? Deforestation is going to drive most of these species to extinction. Some examples are orangutans, Sumatran Tiger, and many Species of birds. According to national Geographic, "Removing trees deprives the forest of portions of its canopy, which blocks the sun's rays during the day and retains heat at night. That disruption leads to more extreme temperature swings that can be harmful to plants and animals." This is huge since this could destroy ecosystems. Herbivores need plants to survive and carnivores, herbivores need animals to survive and if any of the roles are destroyed this can wipe out food chains indefinitely. If there’s no balance it can most definitely destroy biodiversity. The after effects can reach into other countries and the countries itself.
If we put an end to deforestation our annual greenhouse gas emissions would drop by 10%. According to scientific american, “Stopping deforestation will not only reduce our exposure to new disasters but also tamp down the spread of a long list of other vicious diseases that have come from rainforest habitats-Zika, Nipah, malaria, cholera and HIV among them. A 2019 study found that a 10 percent increase in deforestation would raise malaria cases by 3-3 percent; that would be 7.4 million people worldwide.” This would slow down the spread of deadly viruses a lot. We’ve lost so many life’s due to viruses and stopping deforestation would save many more. Additionally ecosystems will be restored and biodiversity will be thriving. altogether, putting an end to deforestation will be a benefit to everyone and all the animals.
If we can put an end to deforestation we can stop global carbon dioxide emissions by 10%!
Did you know that the amazon region has a total of 70% of freshwater or approximately 12% of the worlds freshwater! stopping both deforesation and desertification it would lead to more freshwater supply for everyone.
This is related to global goal #15 since it would encourage more people to have a sustainable choices such using renewable items, eating less meat, etc. this would altogether remove waste and stop deforestation.
