Goals
In the wake of the pandemic, many schools have adapted by adopting online learning classes. Students and teachers alike needed to work together in order to create a functioning learning environment inside their homes, this was to avoid the further spreading of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). As fellow users of online classes, most students are a part of the 92% that believe online learning is as, if not more effective than on site learning. Students and teachers are able to schedule their study times and—for schools—can casually enter classes and allow for a potentially more productive learning session. Not many doubt the effectiveness of online learning.
However, there is no doubt a hint of bias among the common consensus of online learning. Although online mediums have proven their effectiveness in terms of convenience and efficiency, there are cases where students are unable to learn at an optimum level. Speaking from our personal experience, learning virtually poses a degree of difficulty that mass surveys and research papers are simply unable to represent. Oftentimes they require additional individual study to truly understand the topic. And we plan to help aid those students willing to deepen and strengthen their academic knowledge. Cooperating with teachers and perhaps substituting them, we plan to create a server where most academic advice is easily accessible. Establishing a learning community in the process to inspire those who feel discouraged in learning. We want to know their issues, their problems, and their feedback in order to better ourselves and convey to the teacher in the long run.
Our group believes that an online student-led tutoring session will be one of the most effective methods of teaching other students, especially seniors to juniors. Our interactions will be held online, so as to avoid the dangers of the pandemic. We will create a discord server, a well-known media application, and utilize its various unique features for academic purposes. As a side product, we also plan to create a website documenting and listing down topics we have covered so anyone can revisit previously discussed topics. This website will also act as our backup plan. In case that our server receives few direct tutoring requests, we will instead create tutorial videos and enrich our site. The topics we will cover will include mathematics, sciences, English, bahasa Indonesia, and general skills (preview for DP subjects, courses, and [QoL] quality of life skills).
Learning Outcomes
Commitment and Perseverance
Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
This learning outcome would be achieved by simply running and maintaining both the discord server and the website. Our server will act as physical evidence of our tutoring actions, while we will create a compilation and record important milestones along the way. Our commitment and perseverance will not only be shown by the evidence but also the product of our endeavors. The website, discord server, and the end of the program student reviews.
Working collaboratively
Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working, collaboratively
This project is not a one-man task, it will require collaborative work. Research published by Gaskell.A from Forbes suggests that working collaboratively will improve our performance in doing our project. Our project will have a multilayered management; Material research, Website Building, and most importantly the tutoring itself. Collaborative work will be required to distribute the load as to keep CAS a project we can do without bothering our academic lives. The success of the project will be proof of our success in our collaborative work, as well as our group management.
Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
As many students are having problems with their academics, we will be engaging with the issues of global significance. Research done by the University of Illinois exposed that one fatal issue with online classes is student discipline and literacy of technology. This also applies to the teachers and faculty members who aren’t used to teaching their students using the complete tools at their disposal, leading to severe inefficiencies. Our project aims to combat this global issue of learning inefficiency, especially for those students who are struggling to keep up with classes using the online medium due to unsatisfactory or inefficient teaching methods.
Many students are stressed out due to the pressure from school teachers and parents when it comes to academics. We will support their academics and help them to understand their studies even more.
Ethics of Choices and Actions
Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We must conduct our tutoring sessions ethically by acknowledging academic honesty. Our activities will not involve providing direct answers to the students’ questions or doing the students’ schoolwork for them. But instead, we will teach them how to come up with solutions to the problems they are facing by teaching them to solve similar problems.
Learner profile
Caring
We will be providing direct support to the MYP students in need of help, which is an act of compassion. We show that we are caring by making use of what we have learned at school in the past by teaching it to the underclassmen.
Thinker
We will need to think of creative ways to display our information recaps and methods to tutor the students. We need to ensure that we are fully capable of explaining the topic requested to the student (and if not then multiple tutors can help in tutoring the same student).
Open-Minded
We need to consider that everyone has different capabilities in learning, where one topic may be easy to understand for one student and difficult for another. We need to be open to these differences and act accordingly in order to help the students comprehend well. We also need to be open to student feedback in order to improve and optimize our own tutoring techniques
Reflective
As we do the project, there are chances for us to make mistakes. We also need to consider if our tutoring methods suit the students we are helping. As a result, we must be reflective in order to improve our tutoring towards MYP students.
Knowledgeable
To do this project, we must first understand the topic as teaching is said to be the highest level of understanding, we will have to know what we are talking about, otherwise, we would make things worse for them
Inquirer
As we go through with the project, we also need to nurture curiosity in order to find the best way to help the students in need and keep the learning spirit alive. Aside from potentially inspiring our own students, we keep ourselves as inquirers since we need to review any topics that we may have to revisit.
Principled
We need to be principled as we must teach the grade MYP students so that they are also motivated to learn even more, and also so that they can learn more efficiently. We will encourage academic honesty by teaching the students how to get the answer for a problem, and not directly share the answer to said problem.
ATL
Communication skills
Our communication skills are required because we need to communicate well with the students in order to help them with their studies. We need the students to convey what learning method suits them the best, and we need to apply said methods. We also need to be communicative and open in order to create a casual learning environment. We believe that this environment is the biggest advantage student tutors have over teachers.
Thinking skills
Our thinking skills are required to critically analyze the problems the students need help with and conceptualize a method to teach the students. We need to evaluate which methods work with which students and which do not in order to be productive. We might also need to help the students with complicated questions that require us to think critically in order to help solve the problem. We may also need to revisit, simplify, and review our knowledge in a way that is easily understood by any and all underclassmen.
Self-Management skills
We must have Self-Management skills in order not to set goals to be achieved during the tutoring and manage our time well so as to help the students meet their deadlines as well as not hinder our academic progress outside of CAS. Ultimately, this will also help avoid the build-up of stress from the project.
Research skills
We need our research skills to gather information and resources to support our tutoring. The information and resources we need may come from the internet, our textbooks, or from third parties. Therefore, we need to determine the extent of the information that is needed during the tutoring sessions.
Social skills
We need to have social skills in order to be able to communicate with the other students and to be able to make an understandable explanation so that they will understand better. This is because our project is collaborative in nature, and will only work with member participation.
Experiences
Date/Time: 14 - 27 March
CAS Stage: I
LOs achieved: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively by investigating and changing our project proposal into an underclassmen tutoring discord server. Its important that we make and send out a form to investigate what subjects the underclassmen have trouble learning. After weeks of discussion our new project proposal was finally accepted, our new project is an underclassmen tutoring discord server. I felt excited to start this project as I'm mainly part of the IT department which was in charge of the creation of the discord server as well as the archived website. Though there were some troubles setting up a meeting with all of us present as we are all online students but we managed. This is the official start of our CAS Project so for this stage is the investigations and planning stage so each of us can start on our job descriptions. The learner profile I developed during this experience is the communication learner profile as I communicated with my groupmates and advisor to create and finalize our new project proposal. The risk taker learner profile was also developed as our plans were drastically different from our original idea but in the end it paid off as our new proposal was accepted
Date/Time: 28 March - 10 April
CAS Stage: P
LOs achieved: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I achieve this learning outcome by working together with other people in the IT department to create the server while the others are spreading the word of the tutoring server to the underclassmen. This experience was important as it is the start of the server and successfully tutored a student during the 4th of april and I successfully saved the transcript of the conversation and my name in the server is "Jhon" a nickname from my full name "Yohanes". This experience is memorable as when we started our server "Discord Discourse" we managed to get a student in the first couple of days which my friends tutored and I saved the transcript of the conversation. I felt joy as there was a student asking to be tutored in the first couple of days since the word had spread. For this experience since I am the IT I helped with the creation of this server primarily creating the rules/guidelines of the server and saving transcripts of the conversation. The learner profile I developed during this experience is the communication learner profile as I communicated with my group mates so half of us would create the server and the other half spread the word of the server.
Date/Time: 11 - 24 April
CAS Stage: P
LOs achieved: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I achieve this learning outcome by working together with my groupmates to tutor the students coming in and teaching them how to use discord. This experience is important as there were more students asking to be tutored while I was saving the transcripts. The start of our server was doing well as students were coming in for tutoring but it was difficult to decide on a website making platform with the other members of the IT department to start archiving the information in the website but we settled on creating a website doc to first start creating the website text first and making the website later. It was difficult trying to maintain the server while having time to do our own homework and assignments but it was enjoyable to be able to communicate and help an underclassmen. For this experience I started to make the text introduction for our website but I also spent time making a logo for our "Discord Discourse" which was 2 D stacked over one another. The learner profile I developed during this experience is the communication learner profile as I communicated with my groupmates to first create a google docs version of our website.
Date/Time: 6 - 19 June
CAS Stage: A
LOs achieved: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I achieved this learning outcome by showing commitment and preserving through the CAS project even though we were not getting alot of tutor requests. Today's experience was important as it launches the newly redesigned server and website that attracted some underclassmen. The website and server redesign went well as we got an underclassmen requesting a math tutor about angles and another one requesting an english tutor for writing advice. It was depressing not getting a tutor request in the first couple of days but eventually we were overjoyed when we got some underclassmen that needed math and English tutors. For this experience I'm mainly in the tech support channel that answers anything tech related from my group mates and underclassmen but I taught my groupmates how to save the conversation as transcripts. I developed the communicator learner profile as I communicated with underclassmen on how to share the discord server to other classmates as well as teaching my groupmates on how to save conversations.
Date/Time: 20 June - 3 July
CAS Stage: A
LOs achieved: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I achieved this learning outcome by showing commitment and preserving through the CAS project even though we were not getting alot of tutor requests. Today's experience was important as I decided to start compiling the transcripts so it would be used as evidence. It was demotivating when there were no tutor requests for days but we did get an underclassmen that requested a tutor to solve a whole set of physics problems and were happy when they fully understood the topic. I felt really miserable as I spent time designing and redesigning the website but still didn't get many tutor requests and would go days without any request but we sometimes do get requests such as an underclassmen asking for a physics tutor. For this experience I mainly compile the transcript into our shared drive so we could use it for evidence and for safe keeping. I developed the open minded learner profile as I talked with my group mates to have different viewpoints on how to improve and attract more people to our CAS project
Date/Time: 4 - 17 July
CAS Stage: A
LOs achieved: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively because we started to create an audio guide otherwise known as podcasts that briefly explain each subject. Today is important as we split off into pairs and I paired up with abyan to do the business management and economic audio guide. It was memorable as even though we didn't get many tutor requests we would still be motivated to attract more people to our CAS Project. Me and my group felt pretty optimistic as an audio guide would make the underclassmen easier to understand the subject. For this experience I teamed up with abyan to plan and create the business management and economic audio guide. In the end I'm satisfied with not only my team but the other teams of audio guides. I also added all of the audio guides into another section on the top right of the website called audio guide. This experience helped me develop my risk taker learner profile as we took risk to create a new innovative strategy to create an audio guide so underclassmen would easily understand.
