Our 8th Grade ELA Classroom
ELA (English Language Arts) focuses on building speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills.
After completing this course, students will be able to …
Read, comprehend, and analyze grade level texts.
Write increasingly complex narratives and responses to literature.
Appropriately speak and listen across various contexts.
In order to accomplish our ELA goals, we will be completing a survey of different genres of literature. This curriculum will include short stories, novels, non-fiction articles, poetry and music, as well as different forms of media.
We will be reading The Outsiders, Chasing Lincoln's Killer and The Hunger Games as our full length books. Short form reading will include a variety of literature throughout the year, including articles, short stories, and poetry. Please contact me for a reading list as the content changes based on the needs/interests of the students.
Students will also be expected to have an independent reading book of their choice with them every day, and will complete 3 independent reading projects throughout the year. Ask your students what they are reading! These books are self-selected, and if you are buying books or getting them from a local library, please be sure that you are comfortable with your child's book choice.
