House Manger was a small leadership role when I started the position at the Kappa Iota Chapter. It was just swept under the rug and not much was done with it. There were some small things that was suppose to be done, but these things were never done. Nothing was accomplished and it was often taken as a joke.
I was able to turn this all around. A lot of it was by rewriting and getting new house rules approved. By doing this everyone knew that this was a serious position that actually mattered. With this rules, the house was put back in order and became something that the men living there could take pride in. New rules, as well as everyone who lived in the house was being held responsible for their own actions lead to a much more respectable living situation for the fraternity.
My inspiration came from one simple place. As Sigma Chi's we are taught that we must strive to be the best that we can be. while yes, no one is perfect, it is at least noticeable when someone is at least trying. The person who was House Manager before me I personally feel didn't even try at the position. There was so much more that they could have done. My inspiration was to do better then them and make something out of the position.
A lot of people saw the benefits of what I accomplished. The ones who benefited the most was the brothers of the Kappa Iota Chapter. By following the new bylaws they would be in compliance with the Sigma Chi international bylaws and stay in the landlords good graces. While some of the brothers living in the house weren't the biggest of fans of some of the changes, they eventually realized that it was for the greater good.
"As I think about my time as House Manager, I see that while yes I did accomplish a lot. There was still more I could do. Now I want to see what the House Manager does that will surpass what I did and to see how the position continues to grow and evolve." - Jeff Rollins, Edge Journal
