The Council and Mencap are collaborating to bring an exciting new Supported Internship Programme to Sutton for 2024-25, starting in September.
What is the Supported Internship Programme?
A supported internship is a type of work and study programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so. Through the support and experience the internship provides, the students will be able to develop skills and experiences that will enable them to move on into paid employment.
The duration of the programme is one academic year from September 2024 through to July 2025, and will include (unpaid) work placements within the Council. The interns will be supported in the workplace by a Mencap skills coach who will also work with your team to ensure you have all the support and information you need to create an inclusive workplace environment that facilitates interns' success on placement and maximises their chances of securing a paid job outcome. Away from the workplace, interns will also benefit from classes ran by Mencap 1-2 days a week that will teach skills and behaviours needed for the world of work and that will further support the work they do in placement.
We will be holding a briefing session for teams in the council to learn more about supported internships and working with Mencap on Wednesday, the 8th May at 12:00 and Tuesday, the 2nd of July at 10am.
