About the Teacher

What is Mrs. Herbert currently reading?

Winner of the National Book Award, Nathaniel Philbrick's book is a fantastic saga of survival and adventure, steeped in the lore of whaling, with deep resonance in American literature and history.

In 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale, leaving the desperate crew to drift for more than ninety days in three tiny boats. Nathaniel Philbrick uses little-known documents and vivid details about the Nantucket whaling tradition to reveal the chilling facts of this infamous maritime disaster. In the Heart of the Sea, recently adapted into a major feature film starring Chris Hemsworth, is a book for the ages.

Letter from Mrs. Herbert

Hello everyone,

My name is Mrs. Herbert, and I love school! This is my sixth year teaching here at Sunman Dearborn Middle School. One of my favorite things about teaching is reading and feeling like I'm being helpful to my students. I have loved reading since I was in middle school, and I still enjoy it now that I’m out of school!

I graduated from Franklin County High School with Core 40 and Academic Honors diplomas in 2008. I received my Associates of Science in Elementary Education from Ivy Tech Community College in 2010. After transferring to Indiana University East-Richmond, I added middle school Science, Math, and English to my final degree. I finished college in early December of 2012 and had my Bachelors of Science in Education and my teacher’s license by the end of the year. After graduating college, I began my career as a substitute teacher until I got hired as a full time teacher in August 2013. Over the years I have taught Science, Language Arts, Journalism, and Reading.

The summer of 2013, I married to my best friend from high school, Mr. Herbert. He is also a teacher; he currently teaches PLTW classes at Franklin County Schools. We have one daughter, Alana, and one son, Clayton! Alana is a spunky little girl who just celebrated her second birthday over the summer. Clayton is a cuddly little newborn who loves his pacifier. We also have two dogs, Pixie and Leia; a cat, Amoré; and a goldfish, Fishy.

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, baking, decorating cakes and cookies, and a wide variety of other crafty projects. My husband and I love to go to the movies and try out new restaurants. We also visit Indianapolis often to watch the Indy Eleven NASL soccer team play. Our current favorite TV shows include The Flash and America's Got Talent.

All the best,

Mrs. Herbert
