Summer Reading 2024

Check back in with us near the end of May to learn more about our partnership with the Sumter County Library. Our Required Reading page for English 1 Honors - AP/IB English is live.

Sumter School District is partnering with Sumter County Library to beat the summer slide by challenging all students to read for at least 20 minutes a day.  On average, students lose two to three months of learning over the summer.  Beat this summer slide by engaging in reading all summer long. Use the hashtags below to snap a picture of your child reading and share to our facebook, twitter, or instagram page. Read on to discover more ways to have fun reading this summer!

Honors English 1 - AP/IB

Required Summer Reading

Summer reading for honors students prepares them for the next course through the critical reading of a classic text. As students read each book, they are expected to annotate the text. If the book was borrowed from the library or read using an electronic device, the student should keep a double-entry journal or reader’s notebook while reading. Annotating texts is an expectation of college and career ready students.

Upon returning to school, students should be prepared to discuss the required and choice texts. Students’ comprehension of the required reading will be assessed through the composition of a text-dependent analysis essay. Students should refer to their annotations while crafting the essay. Teachers will continue to incorporate themes and topics from these novels throughout the course.
