I was introduced to Non-Violent Communication (NVC) while living at Wild Abundance, a magical place just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. It was particularly important that I develop these skills since it was a communal setting - we needed to be able to express ourselves and share ideas without creating conflict. The owners of the property shared this resource with me, and I have been practicing and exploring NVC ever since!
This style or structure of communication has had a profound impact on the way I communicate with others; it has truly helped me to consider my needs and feelings, as well as those of others, when communicating. I strongly encourage all of my contacts - friends, family, students, colleagues, etc. - to browse these resources, as NVC can provide structure, encourage discourse, and foster empathy. My hope is that we can practice NVC together, supporting each other as we navigate opportunities to connect, share, and build community.
