Every learner will use a world language, in addition to English, to engage in meaningful, intercultural communication, understand and interpret the spoken and written language, and present information, concepts and ideas in local and global communities. Through learning the language, they will gain an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures and compare the language and cultures learned with their own.
The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages were created and continued to be organized by the The National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL). The standards "reflect a continuum of growth in communication skills through the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior, and Distinguished levels". Through "Can-Do" Statements, learners and teachers are able to set goals and monitor progress. These benchmarks address three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational.
Interpretive Reading-Can you understand what you see?
Interpretive Listening-Can you understand what you hear?
Interpersonal Communication-Can you have a conversation with some else?
Presentational Speaking-Can you express yourself in speech?
Presentational Writing- can you express yourself in writing?
Learners in the foreign language classroom will demonstrate use of the target language and knowledge of culture and thus develop Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC).
NCSSFL-ACTFL refers to ICC as "the ability to interact effectively and appropriately with people from other language and cultural backgrounds. ICC develops as the result of a process of intentional goal-setting and self- reflection around language and culture and involves attitudinal changes toward one’s own and other cultures. Intercultural communicative competence is essential for establishing effective, positive relationships across cultural boundaries, required in a global society."
