Nature Journaling

You can get your family connected with the beauty all around them by creating nature journals! Take them with you when you are gardening, hiking, fishing, or exploring new parks and campsites. Nature journals don't have to be fancy: a composition notebook, spiral notebook, or old binder will work perfectly. They are a great way to encourage your child's observation skills as well as language and creativity. Sites like Pinterest can give you even more ideas for prompts and simple art projects to include in your family's journals!

Tips for Nature Journaling:

  • draw what you SEE, not what you THINK you see
  • include labels, notes, and observations
  • be flexible! ex: leaf rubbings, stamps, cut and paste

Grace and Courtesy

In our world, manners matter. And believe it or not, they need to be taught and practiced just like any other subject! We will be covering a range of grace, courtesy, and social/emotional topics over the course of the year. Here are some things you can practice at home!

September: Greetings and Introductions

"Hi! My name is __________. It's nice to meet you!"

October: I'm Sorry

"I'm sorry that I ____________! It was an accident/I won't do that again. Are you ok?"

November: WildSchool Rules

1) Do No Harm

2) Leave No Trace

3) Quiet Feet and Voices

December: My Turn!

"Can I have a turn when you're finished?"

January: New Building Reminders

Be Safe, Respectful, Responsible, AND Kind!

Exploring Nature With Children

Have you ever wanted a more structured way to involve nature study in your home? The "Exploring Nature with Children" is a year-round curriculum with themed weekly units and activities that cover art, science, writing, music, poetry, and more. It is the backbone of our Life Lab class this year, but there are many extensions that we will not have time to get to! ENWC is very affordable and accessible...no teaching degree required! Find it on Google!
