Oster Scholar Cohort: 2022-23
Summit School: K2
College Pathway: Cal Poly Humboldt
Field of Study: Mechanical Engineering
Embodying Summit’s Core Values: "Killian meets all six core values & demonstrates them regularly. He has always been curious about learning new things. Example: when he was 5, he was very curious about how the brain worked and decided to make an experiment about how the brain functioned when watching TV as compared to reading (and their impact). With my help, he created the experiment, did research on Alpha & Beta Waves, did the testing & presented the results at his school science fair. It was quite impressive. He has always been this way, he sees something interesting and does what he can to learn everything about it. He shows courage daily. Not only in his pursuit of education, but also in overcoming his anxiety and putting himself in situations that are challenging for him. His disability makes him stand out and instead of allowing that to hold him back, he steps right to the forefront of a given situation so that he can learn something new and/or just be himself [...]. He has a high level of integrity. If he sees something wrong, he will address it. If he has done something wrong, he will take responsibility and do his best to correct it. Killian is a very respectful person. One of the ways he is respectful is in his daily interactions with peers. He is a very opinionated person and knows that his opinion may not be everyone's. He gives space and takes time to listen to and support those around him. He is also willing to be mistaken in a given situation. He is very responsible. He works hard to own his mistakes and help correct them as he can. He works hard to keep his grades and work at A level.” Anne-Marie Soltero (Killian’s Parent - Nominator)
Oster Scholars’ Concrete Next Step: Killian has applied and been accepted to Humboldt State and will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Once he graduates Humboldt, his goal is to look into getting his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (focus solid mechanics and materials) if he does not go straight to getting his license and begin his work as a Mechanical Engineer. Either way, his goal is to work as a mechanical engineering and go for his masters soon after.
