Embodying Summit’s Core Values: “I might describe Julia as an unbelievably bright light cloaked at times beneath dark clothing. Integrity, courage, compassion, responsibility — these core characteristics flow through Julia like a raging river. All were on display as I watched her give a beautiful eulogy for her mother in January, a guiding star in Julia’s life, a woman who poured her life into celebrating all the ways that Julia was both staying connected with her familial roots and also finding opportunities as a first-generation immigrant that were reaching for the stars. I am heartbroken that her mother will not get to see her go out into the broader world but I know that she would be so proud. I certainly am. I’ve watched her help lead a wild bunch of 27 souls that is our mentor group for years, taking charge at times, and other moments carefully sitting back with a watchful eye trying to keep us together through the pandemic. She speaks her mind when it is necessary, even though it is difficult. She holds herself to high standards, even when they scare her. I could go on and on, but just know that Julia is so worth it, and I am tremendously appreciative that you have given her this opportunity to prove it.” Miles Bennett-Smith (Prep Teacher - Nominator)
Oster Scholars’ Concrete Next Step: Julia plans to attend a 4 year college to pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology. She chose this path because because she believes that this pathway will give me her the ability to provide for her family, support herself, and make an impact in the world.
