Oster Scholar Cohort: 2022-23
Summit School: Everest
Community College Pathway: Foothill College
Field of Study: Ultrasound Technician
Embodying Summit’s Core Values: “Emely excelled in math and as a result, she was identified by the freshmen teacher as a teacher assistant. As a teacher assistant, Emely was able to develop her leadership skills and be able to support fellow peers. The result of this was students feeling supported and seeing an upperclassman as a positive role model. Emely, particularly, made a difference in the life of a freshman. The student was falling behind in all of her classes. She was not engaging in the class. Emely was paired up with the student, and she supported the student with her math work. Working with the student, helped Emely learn how to tutor students with math, but also how to build rapport with students. After working with the student, Emely was able to see how her work had a ripple effect on the work the student did for her other class. This is one of many instances where Emely has demonstrated compassion at school. Emely has left a mark in the lives of students she helped as a TA. She will continue to leave a mark on those that she meets and works with throughout her life.” - Maria Munoz Yepez (Everest Teacher - Nominator)
Oster Scholars’ Concrete Next Step: Emely’s long-term goal is to become an ultrasound technician. In order to do so, she will be enrolling at Foothill College to complete a major in Public Health and Psychology courses. While at Foothill, she will be working with an academic advisor to built her plan in more detail and take advantage of opportunities offered at Foothill and outside to gain more experience and acquire more skills. Upon completing her degree, she is considering transferring to a four-year institution or an Allied Health Program to finish her requirements. Once she has met the requirements, she will apply to the Foothill College Ultrasound Program. Immediately after graduating, she plans to begin working right away. She wants to be an ultrasound technician because her aunt is a radiologist, and inspired Emely to pursue the career.
