Oster Scholar Cohort: 2023-24
Summit School: Everest
College Pathway: San Jose State University
Field of Study: Psychology
Embodying Summit’s Core Values:
Alexa exemplifies compassion every day during mentor time. We have a mentee who arrived last year at Everest and is still learning English. I have seen how she will work with her peers on assignments to ensure that she is successful and feels comfortable in the classes. It is inspiring to see how she cares about her mentee’s success. She greets teachers with respect and ensures that she accomplishes all her work in all of her classes. Alexa also seeks support when she needs it, with respect. She will first ask teachers how they are doing and then ask for help, which demonstrates her respect and compassion.
Oster Scholars’ Concrete Next Step:
Her long-term goal is to become a nurse. While in a different country, she got injured and a nurse helped her, which inspired her to pursue nursing. Alexa is excited to pursue nursing as she wants to give back to her community, use her bilingual skills, and help grow Latina representation in the nursing field. For her upcoming Expeditions round, she will be focusing on learning medical terminology and phrases in Spanish to support Spanish-speaking patients in understanding the medical jargon. To attain her long-term goal, her short-term goal is to graduate from San Francisco State University. She knew it was the school when we went to visit San Francisco State in the fall and she met and talked with current students and the EOP office. She will be majoring in psychology and working closely with the counselors to meet all the prerequisites to be eligible to apply for the nursing program, in the fall of her sophomore year
