Twelve year-old Mabel will spend the summer in Namibia with her doctor parents as they work in a village to cure water-related illness. She's anything but excited. But when she meets Zariya, everything changes. Zariya's mother is very ill, and may not recover. As Mabel's parents work to save her, Mabel grows close to her new friend. Zariya teaches her about the culture and the land, and the two discover a magic power in a family bracelet, but most importantly they discover the power of friendship.

"The airplane seats shook. Out the window I saw orange desert with dusty green shrubs getting closer, and closer. We hovered for just a second, then wheels touched down and suddenly it all seemed real. The floor vibrated as the plane rolled to a stop. We grabbed our bags and walked down the stairs to the tarmac and followed the crowd towards the building with a sign reading Hosea Kutako International Airport.
I stopped and spun around looking back from where we came. Then I turned left and right. There was nothing in sight except a few other planes. Beyond that it seemed nothingness stretched infinitely across the desert. Bright and clear blue reached across the sky. Palm trees lined the outside of the building. The cracks in the tarmac were filled with orange sand which reminded me I’m not at the beach with my friends. Taking deep breaths I filled my lungs with fresh air, a welcome relief after being trapped in my seat. We followed the crowd into the building and went to passport control and customs. Wow. I’m really here. It’s really happening. "
How it works
Purchasing a book supports Mammdu Trust by funding their new library and allowing them to buy reused books. Along with each book you get a bracelet made by children at Mammadu.
Mammadu Trust
Mammadu Trust is a non-profit organization in Windhoek, Namibia with the mission of caring for and supporting orphans, children, and minors living in incredibly vulnerable situations, by providing nourishing food, education, and basic health care. When we were in Namibia we visited Mammadu Trust, and met some of the kids, and also brought some books for their new library.
Mammadu is now creating a library for the children, since libraries in Windhoek require a fee, and families cannot afford to pay it. The implementation of the library will inspire reading. A book purchase goes directly to Mammadu Trust to buy reused books for the growing library. (The shown library above is the most recent).
My name is Channing Miller and I'm in 9th grade at Summit School. I love playing sports like soccer and tennis, as well as hanging out with my friends. Two key interests that sparked this business were travel and writing. We traveled to Namibia this summer to visit friends that were living there. While we were there we visited Mammdu Trust, which inspired me to do this project. I also have a passion for writing, which led to the creation of "Âmà's Bracelet."
