Discover what kind of books they like to read and build their stamina
Be exposed to varieties of genre of text (nonfiction, series, poetry)
Independently choose appropriately challenging books
Respond to text orally and in writing.
Take charge of their reading by making decisions, planning in more sophisticated ways, setting goals and building on their repertoire of strategies as readers
Participate in partner talk- when students talk about books their investment in reading increases- develops comprehension & thinking as a reader
Build fluency- essential that they read books “like they’re talking”—that is with speed, as well as with expression and phrasing
Grow from learning to read to reading to learn!
Additional Note:
To see growth in their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension students spend 30 minutes a day in school and should spend at least 20 minutes at home reading in just-right books. Students may take home their book baggies but will need to bring them back to school each day.
