Middle School Curriculum

Students in the Sullivan County Virtual Learning Academy will be expected to take benchmarks, RTI screeners, TCAPs and complete assignments aligned to Tennessee State standards. Teacher expectations will be at their highest for the program to be successful. There will be an application process for students to enter the Academy and contractual commitments made from home and school.

TIME REQUIREMENTS FOR ONLINE INSTRUCTION

The Tennessee Department of Education requires that each middle school student spend 6.5 hours of instructional time each day. This includes the time it takes for the teacher to deliver the instruction as well as the time it takes a student to complete the assigned task.

TN READY AND END OF COURSE EXAMS

TNReady is a part of the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) and is designed to assess true student understanding, not just basic memorization and test-taking skills. It is a way to assess what our students know.

CURRICULUM INFORMATION

The Sullivan County Virtual Learning Academy is an online schooling option supported by an online learning solution, and led by grade-level teachers. In grades 6-8, daily lessons are recorded as the teacher provides live instruction to their own in-person students in their personal classrooms. The lessons can be viewed at any time by Academy students, allowing tremendous flexibility for families. Students learn from home, with parent involvement, and connect to curriculum, teachers, and resources using the internet. Most importantly for families, the Sullivan County Virtual Learning Academy is FREE to Tennessee residents.

Great teachers are the foundation of the Sullivan County Virtual Learning Academy experience. Our teachers are talented, passionate, certified, and receiving specialty training to excel in online teaching. Although students complete lessons independently from home, they also meet with teachers in an online classroom. In this safe learning environment, students can participate in instruction, review, and discussion. Teachers reach out to students regularly by phone and E-Mail, and they are available to help students and parents via virtual office hours.

In grades 6-8, students will take English/Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social studies courses. The middle grades ELA, 6–8, curriculum will solidify the ELA foundation by increasing the complexity of text selection and tasks while continuing instruction in comprehension to include grammar and writing. Math courses will include understanding math concepts, fluency (mastery of math facts), and application. All lessons are aligned to Tennessee Academic Standards which can be found by selecting the subject below:
