The SCRTA hopes to encourage those who are interested in teaching to work in Sullivan County. The SCRTA scholarships are awarded to Sullivan County graduates or Sullivan County school employees who have entered the college of education. The SCRTA also assist with the cost of Praxis exams. There is an application process, and applicants should provide clear and accurate information. The scholarship application can be found on the FORMS page.
The SCRTA members have left their positions but not the profession. We continue to support public school teachers and their students. We meet with the Director of Schools in Sullivan County to make plans to better serve our school system. We notify our representatives at the state and federal levels to express our concerns with new legislative matters on education and benefits for retirees.
The luncheon committee sets the locations, dates, menus, and programs for the SCRTA Luncheon Meetings. We are fortunate that our school system pays for one luncheon each year which we hold at one of the schools. We are always looking for suitable locations for the remaining three luncheons. The meals are complimentary for SCRTA members and guests.
The Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association keeps the community informed of our projects. Find out more about us on Facebook, the area newspapers, our website, and local television networks’ news shows.
The membership committee plans school visits to reach out to activeteachers considering retirement. The committee wants to invite previously retired educators to attend our luncheons and get to know us. The membership committee is always looking for ways to gain new members.
Community Participation and Involvement, Scrapbook, and Necrology
The SCRTA contributes to two charities. We use a needs list to supply the Sullivan County Family Involvement center with items to assist students and their families. We also contribute to Oasis of Kingsport in their efforts to provide laundry services to their clients.
For several years the SCRTA has awarded three grants of $500 to fund teachers’ ideas for their classrooms. There is an application process and the Mini Grant Committee picks winners to represent the elementary, the middle school, and the high school levels. Applications can be found on the FORMS page.
