I love to refresh my wardrobe and that often involves a closet clean out. But what do you do with your old clothes? How do you avoid them ending up in the landfill?
While it is difficult to say if a garment will ever end up in a landfill, extending the life of the garment is the best option.
We share a few ways to further extend the life of the garment, even when you are done with it.
Evaluate why you are getting rid of the item.
Is a part broken like a button or zipper?
Does it no longer fit but is otherwise good?
Is it a special occasion item you plan not to wear again?
Is it hanging on for its life and should not be donated?
The reason you are getting rid of the item helps determine how best to handle the garment.
Evaluate which option fits your particular situation
If it is broken, it can likely be repaired. A tailor, repair fairs, or even a quick video tutorial can help get your garment fixed in no time. Repairs can include taking garments in, hems, and fixing buttons.
If the garment no longer fits, but is otherwise good, it still has some life left. There are several ways to keep good garments in rotation.
A clothing swap or sharing with family or friends is a great option. Another option is to donate to a local charity. We have been proud supporters of charities such as YWCA and Rose Haven who have programs to accept donated clothing in good condition.
If you have special occasion wear like a prom dress or suit, there are several charities that can accept these goods and use the funds/programs to support women. For example, Dress for Success and Adorned in Grace in the Portland area.
If the garment is hanging on by a literal thread, what are some options to discard the item?
Upcycle! Depending on the fabric, you can cut them up into cleaning rags or other household items.
Use a service to upcycle at an industrial scale such as RidWell to send in your items.
Buy a Bag from a specific retailer and get store credit for your old clothes. Some examples are Poplinen and Mate the Label.
Reflect on your experience
What is the most common reason you found for getting rid of the clothing items?
Are there items you wore until it was falling apart and now need to replace?
What are some ways you can extend the life of the garments you still have in your closet?
We are all human, and our clothing does not last forever. At some point, we have to reflect on the items we need to discard and how to do it the most sustainably. Extending the life of the garment continues to be my favorite way to reduce the overconsumption and clothing waste. I hope these tips inspired you to consider new ways to handle the clothes in your next closet clean out.
