Course Description:
This course is designed to provide in-depth coverage of the NYS Math curriculum in preparation for the Regents exam, which is required for an Advanced Regents diploma. The course focuses on polynomial, rational and radical relationships, complex numbers, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and statistical inferences. The course culminates in June with the NYS Regents examination. TI-Nspire CX graphing calculators will be integrated into the curriculum and are available for in-class use. Due to supply limitations, these calculators must remain in the classroom. However, there are several free online graphing calculators (eg. Desmos) that are available to students for at-home use. NYS does not allow the use of the TI-Nspire CX CAS or any calculator with symbolic manipulation on the Regents examination.
Google Classroom:
Daily assignments will be posted in Google Classroom. It is each individual student’s responsibility to check Google Classroom every day, find their assignment, complete it, and submit their solutions. These documents will not be photocopied and distributed in class, but students are welcome to print a copy for personal use. To access our Google Classroom, click “join a class” and enter x5bd4kb. If for some reason this code does not work, please let me know as soon as possible.
Academic & Behavioral Expectations:
Because of the quantity/difficulty of the material covered in this course, it is important to set the bar high. Therefore, students should plan on completing and submitting homework assignments every day. Expect these assignments to be graded based upon effort and accuracy. Students who miss a class for any reason are expected to complete all assignments in a timely manner. When in doubt, contact Mr. VanHorne with questions or to make necessary arrangements.
Quizzes/Tests are usually given on a weekly basis.
Throughout the year students will prepare for the NYS Algebra II Regents Exam. This will involve completing numerous cumulative review assignments in addition to the normal daily assignments.
As far as behavioral expectations are concerned, I trust all students will respect their classmates, respect their teacher, and most importantly, respect themselves by working hard and giving their best effort.
Grading Procedure:
30% Homework
70% Quizzes, tests, cumulative review assignments, etc.
Additional Assistance:
Most students run into difficulties in this course. Therefore, I encourage students to ask questions and come in for extra help as often as possible. I am often available in Room 106 before school, after school, and during 9th period. Additional times may be available upon request.
Generative AI: The use of generative AI tools is NOT permitted for any assignment in this course. Please be advised that submitting work created using generative AI tools may be considered a violation of Spackenkill High School’s Academic Integrity Policy (located on page 9 of the Student Handbook) and may result in disciplinary action.
