5th Grade General Music

Remote Learning

In 5th grade general music, students have been learning about instrument families. We began with the brass family. We will continue next with woodwinds, then strings, then percussion.

Be sure to scroll all the way down to watch all of the videos, find a coloring book and some fun worksheets too!

Introduction to the Orchestra the Portland Youth Philharmonic

Each section (or subsection) of the instrument families will play arrangements that student players created to demonstrate the unique sounds of their instruments. Listen and watch carefully. See if your instrument or that of a sibling can be found in the video.

The Young People's Guide to the Orchestra- a game!

Here is a fun way to learn about the instruments. Play a game! You will need to have Adobe Flash in order to play the game. The link on the left is to register for the game to save your place if you stop in the middle of play. You are NOT required to log in if you would rather keep your privacy. However, if you don't register, you can play again, but you must start over from the beginning.

An Overview of the orchestra

This video discusses the instruments of the orchestra, and also demonstrate how the sounds of each section are produced. Listen carefully when each section plays to hear the sound of the family.

Below you can listen to music played by each section of the orchestra family.

Brass only - Review

Strings only

Here's what happens when young people practice.

Percussion only

On the left, here is a percussion only ensemble. The video is really long. Listen to it and watch as long as you'd like. Watch how the xylophone, vibraphone and other percussionists play.

For something a different, watch this video to see what the percussionists sees when performing.

To answer the questions on the worksheets below you will need to visit Making Music Fun. There are, for some instruments, videos to show you how they are made!

Next week there will be 2 different worksheets to complete.

Also, there is FREE music you can download if you play one of these instruments. Have fun with this!
