Remote learning and Beginner Strings

This is a link to Ms. Valentine's platform of Essential Elements Interactive, to which I also have access. All Beginner Strings students have an account. Students can visit the site, practice their work, and make recordings for teacher evaluations. Students should be practicing everyday, for at least 10-20 minutes per day. If you have any questions, please contact me via email.

In addition, if you have questions for Miss Valentine, you can access her website using this link: https://sites.google.com/a/sufsdny.org/hagan-strings/

Bile 'Em Cabbage Down Video

Sorry for the delay, but here is the video for Bile 'Em Cabbage. Here are the steps to learning it:

  1. Please learn to sing the song FIRST! Make sure you are comfortable singing the song, all by yourself.
  2. When you know the song, find your D string Violin: Good Dogs Always Eat Viola: Cats Go Down Alleys

3. Pizzicato first! Make sure you know where your left hand fingers are going. The song starts on F# (D string, 2nd piece of tape, also called Mi). Then what would the next note be? (HINT: it stays on the same string. Does it go up or down?)

4. Once you figure it out, and can pizzicato very comfortably, add your bow. Keep it straight between the bridge and the fingerboard.

5. Have fun!

6. If you need help, send an email. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

7. HAVE FUN!!

Bile 'Em Cabbage Down

There will be some short videos available on Tuesday for students to learn "Bile 'Em Cabbage Down". Please follow the steps as indicated in the video. There is NO music for this piece. It is a "fiddling" tune and is to be learned in the traditional manner-by "rote" or "by ear". Please download and print this file if you need it.

Learn to sing the song. If you can sing it, you can play it.

Practice Sheets for "Remote" Learning

Below are the practice sheets and assignments for Miss Berube's string students. Please print and complete them as you would normally. They will be due when students return to school.

If there are any questions or problems, please email and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Beginner Strings

  • Students meet in room 18, once a week for lessons.
  • Lesson days are "fixed" meaning they occur on the same day at the same time, every week. The session lasts 40 minutes.
  • Students should have the following items to be prepared for their lesson: their instrument, lesson book, folder with all handouts, a pencil and completed practice sheet.
  • Extra help is available for all 3rd grade students with Ms. Valentine on Tuesdays, during recess. If a student wishes to attend extra help, make sure they bring their instrument on that Tuesday if extra help is not on their lesson day.

You can also visit Ms. Valentine's website by clicking on this link or the picture to the left.
