Class Objectives (based on the current, full academic calendar)

  • The High School Band at Sturgeon is comprised of students in grades 9 – 12, who are studying wind and/or percussion instruments.

  • Topics covered will include, but not be limited to: deciphering and understanding musical notation, historical and exploratory studies of the instruments and music that we play, fundamental sound production, listening skills, kinesthetic breathing exercises, and concert preparation.

  • We will procure our own instruments (new or used) and reinforce good, habitual maintenance and functionality - we need ALL instruments in proper playing condition at all times!

  • We will perform as a concert band for formal concerts, and as an athletic band (pep band) at the basketball games.

    • See the '21–'22 HS Band Handbook for dates and times (always subject to change)

  • We will always respect each others' property, including all instruments, as well as each other as musicians. We cannot exist without good self-discipline and understanding as to what we need to be doing at every moment, in order to maximize our rehearsal potential. In short, becoming better musicians = becoming better people!

Items Needed for Every Rehearsal

  • Your instrument, in proper playing condition

    • Brass will need their proper mouthpiece(s)

    • Woodwinds will need their respective reeds (flutes exempt)

    • Percussion will need their own mallets and sticks, as few will be provided by the school

  • Your music, either in your band book or folder

  • Yourself - your health is critical to the band's success, so we need everyone of you
