Dear Parent/Guardian,
Hi, my name is Mr. Peter Flynn and I am your child’s teacher this year. I am looking forward to a very exciting and productive year. Our course work is centered on a "Flipped Classroom" model. Students will be expected to complete homework which is centered around a 5-8 minute video or an online worksheet. My webpage may help your child in our class.
In an effort to minimize questions and concerns, I want you and your student to understand my major goals for all students. They will:
Develop skills in written and oral expression by relating historical events to our ever-changing world.
Learn to work cooperatively and take mentoring roles that will help them in life.
Stay focused on tasks, learn the long-range plan and be successful in goal setting.
Speak in front of groups with confidence and style.
Your child will be challenged in and out of the classroom. I have a very structured routine for students when they arrive and leave a class. If students miss class, they will be expected to complete missed assignments.
When a student misbehaves, I impose consequences such as a brief delay during class passing times. Please emphasize how important it is to arrive on time to class. Tardiness impacts your child’s learning and success. If the problem is not corrected after a warning, then I will use the plan approved by the Barwise administrators.
Materials
Each student must have the following materials:
Folder
Pencil or black/blue ink pen
A highlighter
1 box of Kleenex
Earbuds or audio headsets (THIS IS VERY CRITICAL FOR YOUR CHILD TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE SET).
Grading Procedures (This is a district-level decision for all Middle School Social Studies curriculum). Once six-week grades go final, I will not go back and readjust grades. If your student is absent, it is their responsibility to check online in Google Classroom, Wizer, Edpuzzle, and GoFormative for assignments. Almost all daily assignments are located on these online platforms. Students should have no excuse for completing them, short of lack of wifi. However, in most cases, they can get a downloadable application that supports these programs and can complete them using a cellphone.
Tests/Quizzes 60%
Daily Work 40%
I look forward to working with your child this year at Barwise. If you have any questions during the year, please feel free to contact me at the school. You may send me an email using the school website. I will be happy to discuss anything that will help your child be successful.
Sincerely,
Peter Flynn
