The book I'm reading is called Troils & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft by Sharpe, Tess. This book talks about 15 different stories of women who are witches, what their struggles are, and how throughout their life they learn how to embrace their powers, reclaim their destinies, and use their magic to create, curse, cure, and kill. I recommend this book because it talks about things women struggle with every day, and how people judge anyone without even knowing them. The characters in the book all made different decisions regarding what people thought of them and what they said about them, and I really like this because there are so many different ways to approach a problem, and each character chooses a different way.
During Literacy Month we created a banner, and a display, chose different color books to display, fillers, literacy quizzes, book recommendations, hide slinkies, create bookmarks, promoted literacy month on social media, read out loud to other students in our school, we had a bookfair, we took a field trip to an elementary school and we read to the elementary school kids. Our research process consisted of my classmates and I reading different articles telling us how important reading is, we found our own statistics, and we also watched videos. Next, we analyzed and brainstormed what we thought were the most important facts to inform everyone else to encourage reading. As a team, we planned how the display and the banner were going to look, where to hide the slinkies, where to put the fliers, who was reading to other students at our school, and who was going to read first to the elementary school kids. I think finding the slinkies and getting caught reading worked really well because it rewards students with books they would like to read. The fliers did not work as well because it seemed like people barely looked at them, and many were on the floor the next day. The roles I served throughout the month were helping out with the display by gluing the book covers, and I helped a little with the banner by gluing even more book covers. I hung up the fliers and helped hide the slinkies, and I read to other students at this school. My favorite part about the month was finding the slinkies and winning a prize, getting caught reading, and winning a book, and I also liked reading during the first 10 minutes of class because I enjoy reading in a quiet place and it helps me not get distracted easily. I think what was missing was getting teachers more involved, promoting literacy month more, and having more hands-on activities. I believe this will have a good impact on students at KHS by getting them to read more. What I have learned from this event is that reading is very important and we should encourage more people to read, especially teenagers.
