Art 4 Sketchbook

Frankie Yan

Grade 12

I'm most excited to get feedback on my work and work on techniques and with mediums I'm interested in.

I'd like to think I'm good at coming up with ideas.

I have 5 pets and 4 younger brothers.

Weekly Reflection - November 13-17, 2023

The biggest challenge so far has been working with my interviewees. They've been very helpful, but if I feel I need to consult them it can take a pretty long time. Unfortunately there are a few things I needed in order to move forward with the project I was working on in class that I've been waiting on for a week now because my interviewee has been busy. I started working on another piece for my portfolio in the meantime, so I have two half done projects right now. Next week I'll continue working on my second piece until I get what I need for the first one. If I don't get it by the end of next week I'll probably need to go forward without them. Luckily it was just the reference images, so if I can't get it from them I'll take them myself. I was going to use her face as the reference since she wanted it to be like a portrait and it was about her, but when it comes down to it, any face will do since it's about the expressions. If it was something like a crucial piece of information and this happened, I'd probably need to drop the project.

Weekly Reflection - November 27-December 1, 2023

The biggest challenge I had this week was getting the yellow opaque. School grade yellow acrylic is really hard to do this with, so I spent four days layering it to no avail before I finally listened to a friend and mixed the yellow with a little white. Now that this piece is done I can focus on my other one, which I'll probably finish next week. Then I'm on to planning more pieces and doing more interviews.

Weekly Reflection - December 4-8, 2023

My biggest challenge this week was interviewing someone for my next piece. It's always stressful to do so, but it's very rewarding. I got it done without any issue, but I'm having trouble making a sketch of my ideas that I like. I also finished painting the plexiglass for my last piece, so all that's left is wood blocks to hold them. Next week I hope to start some drafts of my next piece.

Weekly Reflection - December 11-15, 2023

My biggest challenge was starting on my third interviewee's final piece. It was really hard to imagine how it'd actually turn out from the sketches I made, especially as it was going to be collage, which is not one of my strong points. As I got further along in it I was able to see it come together more, which was a big relief. I got it a little more than halfway done, and I finished my second interview piece at home on friday. Next week I'll start on my next interview and finish interview #3.

Weekly Reflection - February 5-9, 2024

My biggest challenge this week was using oil, which I love using but am admittedly very inexperienced in. I used what little I already knew and did some more of my own research on it in order to get the effects I wanted. This was the first of a mini series of 3, so it was unsurprisingly the most challenging. Now that it's finished (finished piece on projects page) I'll be moving on to the next two pieces.

Weekly Reflection - February 12-16, 2024

I started on the last two pieces of my mini series. I was a lot more comfortable with the medium by this point, but I was so focused on getting the paint to work the way I wanted that some points I was trying to include were a bit lacking. There are some intentional inconsistencies that I feel in all three pieces is a bit lacking. They'll probably all still be wet for a while, so if I have time after completing other pieces for the portfolio I'll try to make it look more intentional.
