Drawing Unit

Final Drawing

Compositional Drawing

Practice

- What are three things about DRAWING you learned during this unit?

I learned more about proportions, perspective, and value. Proportions helped me in the compositional drawings of Bartholomew (though I seemed to have forgotten about it by the time we reached the final drawing), and so did perspective and value.

- Why did you choose the MEDIA (graphite or charcoal) and OBJECT you did for your final drawing?

I chose to draw my furby Bartholomew in charcoal. Bartholomew is my lovely furby son (who is 22-24 years old according to when the original furbies were made), and before we started the final project, I had been drawing a lot of furbies in bikinis, so I was pretty focused on them.

- What did you do well in your final drawing? What challenges did you have?

I had a lot of fun making the final drawing, but there's problems with the proportions and directions of his fur and body.

Pen Unit

Zine

Inktober

What did you learn about drawing with pen (provide 2 examples)

I learned some cool pen techniques, and that different sorts of pen and ink are really neat!

What was the theme of your Zine? How did you communicate it? What would you improve or change if your could

My theme was dinosaur problems. I communicated through Dinosaur. I would have continued the series if I could change anything.

Who is your portrait of? Why did you choose that person/pet?

  1. The final portrait is of me. I wasn't going to do myself, I was going to do of Rae, but it really wasn't working so I gave up and restarted.

What media did you use? What style? Why?

Colored pencil. I had been using colored gel pens to make portraits on my own time in class because I didn't have my normal supplies on me. I like how it looked so I tried something similar for my portrait, but with colored pencil instead. I drew a rough idea in red based on what I saw and then winged it. It's what I tend to do when I'm doing something from "observation".

What works best about your portrait? What was a challenge?

Using the colored pencil was what worked best, along with being the challenge. I don't usually use colored pencil, so it was a challenge, but using something I don't normally do and going for it was the cool fun part too.

Final Exam

Compare your drawing from the first day of school to the artwork you re-created. What has changed about how you find ideas and develop them (planning)? What is different about how you come up with ideas at the end of Beginning Art compared to at the start of the course? Please give specific examples.

The drawing from the first day of school was just doodles of cats, dinosaurs, and girls in blue marker. There wasn't any planning whatsoever, and I wasn't really thinking about what I was going to do as I did it. I'm still not really thinking in detail about what I'm going to do, that's something I do when I get there. I like having an idea of what I'm going to do though, like the subject and what they're doing. My plan of the process hasn't changed, scribble until it looks right. It's changed from my previous doodles, I've been putting a lot more detail, trying different media, and branching out to subjects I don't typically draw.

What new skills and techniques have you learned in Beginning Art? What techniques will you continue to use in your personal art? Give three examples of techniques you’ve learned and discuss how you used them in your artwork.

I learned that I'm a big fan of charcoal, definitely using that in personal art. Big fan of the dark bold strokes it makes, and so, even though I didn't use charcoal, I did use bold dark lines! You can see them in the hair of backgrounds of some of the cube's faces. Another technique I learned is stippling! I'm not sure if i's still stippling or if it's just blotting, but it's one of those that I used. I used it a lot in the Arnold & Bug face for their fur. Another skill/technique I'm working on that's clear on my cube is layering. I used layering on every side. It's probably most evident on the Gerald & Friend face, as Gerald is just painted over his friend. I'll definitely continue to use this and stippling in my personal art.

Least successful

What was the least successful project you made during Beginning Art? Describe the work you made. Why was the work not as successful? What would you do differently if you made the work again? What did you learn from the experience?

My least successful project was probably my scratchboard project, as I didn't finish it. If I could change anything, it would be to not get sick! I learned that I can't do anything when I'm sick. Also, the bits I was there for were fun.

Most proud of

What project are you the most proud of? Describe the work you made. What about the work made it successful? What do you like best about it? What did you learn during the project?

I'm most proud of the self-portrait I made. It was really cool, I used a bunch of colored gel pens to color in my face. I had fun while making it, so maybe that's what made it successful? I learned that self-portraits aren't too bad.
