For For my independent assignment I chose Alex Cearns, she is known for her pet, animal, and wildlife photography. Alex would take photos of wildlife outside of her studio and would also bring animals in to take photos of the animals. Alex would take in animals that were hurt or alone and would take photos of them and return them back to their places. When taking photos of animals she had said “I sit about a foot away from them with a 24-70mm lens, right at the minimum focus distance. For the dogs especially it can be quite tiring as it’s a bit like a training session. I have the camera in one hand and a treat in the other, and from there it’s a matter of keeping them focused on me.” She had also said she takes about 5 minutes winning them over and would spend about 15 minutes taking photos of them. This will help me further in my assignment to know how to get the right photo's for this assignment and gives me advice for me to get the animals to listen.
This is an example of the photos she had taken, she had said that the photo is all about timing. Alex had used a Canon EOS-1D X, 24-70mm f/4 lens @ 24mm. 1/125s @ f13, ISO 100.
In this photo, I was using the rules of third putting her on the right side of the photo leaving an empty background. I was going for the photos Alex takes of dogs using a darker background closer up and in person with the animal.
In this photo, I was going for the center of the frame with a blurred empty background giving the viewer a better view of the dog"s features.
Light & Shadow photography uses strong lights to make the shadow effect on a photo it makes the photo more abstract and creates patterns. It can also be a way to show more definition in the photo and show the things that aren't naturally seen. Taking these photos in a darker area with certain bright lights will make the photo show more of the light & shadow effect.
Framing the main subject blocks the outer places and puts more focus on the main object. Framing an object also makes the picture look more pleasing and keeps the viewer focused on the framed object. It directs attention to the main scene and adds depth to the photo.
Filling the frame of a photo with a certain object makes the picture focus on the object more closely. It also leaves out all of the negative empty space in the background. To get a picture to fill the frame you get close to the object you are taking a picture of and make sure there is no negative background.
Camera angels help make the picture look more dramatic. From a lower angel photo it can make things look very big, from a higher angle it can make things look smaller. To get a lower angel you need to be lower than the object of person you are taking a photo of, this can be laying on the ground or putting the object in a higher place in order for you to get the perfect lower angle picture. To get a higher angle you need to be above the object you are taking a picture of and focus it on the object below you make a bigger thing look smaller.
Rule of Thirds is a small thing to make a photograph more appealing. The frame is split into thirds putting the main object on either the left or right of the frame, leaving 2/3 of the picture open. This gives it more of an authenticated look and will draw the view"s attention to the main object of the picture.
This photo is of my dog Molly in a yard. This follows the rules of 3rd because her face is 2/3 from the right. The background is blurred while the main object is in focus. Focusing the camera on a moving object such as a dog may be a little more difficult to focus. Focusing the camera on the object is better to do faster in order to get the right photo.
