In my first drawing, I tried to use very smooth, graceful and thin/tapering lines.
Here, the lines represent sweetness. I wanted to express the feeling of comfort when you eat something sugary. It represents calm and satisfaction.
In this drawing the lines I tried to use are thin zigzag and sharp lines.
In this one, I represented acidity with those zigzag lines. This type of line gives a feeling of action, like the feeling of something making your tongue tingle. The irregularity of those lines represents acidity.
My work uses cubist style because I broke my drawing into multiple parts like we saw in every cubism art. The style of my drawing at first was more smooth, I had to really break it in different parts to recognize the cubist style.
I think that for me, it was really hard to imagine my drawing in a cubism style because I struggled with the cutting part. At first I thought it wouldn't look good the way I did it. Something I am really proud of in this artwork is the shading of the colors. I didn’t think I could do this and I actually did a great job!
For this project, we had to carve a block for each color and transfer the design by putting paint on the block and pressing it on a paper. I decided to show the texture of polar bear hair. I chose this texture because I thought it was interesting to try to show each hair on the bear. It was hard to show this texture because it was only very thin hair so I had to be really precise.
It’s a reduction print because we had to carve more after each time we painted. A relief print is when you carve away the area you don’t want the paint to go, so each time we carved the part where the paint isn’t going so you color the raised up area. The registration is the number of print you do, we did 5 so we had to print 5 times on 5 different papers each time.
It was interesting to learn about this process. It was really challenging to carve the block because once you did it, you can’t undo it so you have to be very careful. I think I succeeded at the colors I chose because I like how my artwork looks but I think I could have done better with the carving part.
My inspiration were conch shells, I wanted to make just a simple one. I think I didn't change anything from my original plans.
I used a block of plaster and carved into it. At first I roughly carved the edges and then when I had the approximative form I wanted, I carved more precisely into it. I painted it with a creamy white color to make it look as close as I could to a real shell. I also tried to add some shades.
I learned how to carve and that it’s a very precise process. I really needed to be meticulous the whole time to make sure I wont take out too much material. I think it’s a good project to learn how to be patient and careful.
The sculpture represents my family. Each form represents one person. I chose to put mine in the center to show that I am the pillar that holds us with each other. My parents are not together anymore but they are still on very good terms for me. I also included my brother, we only have the same mom. I represented him as a cube with an organic form around it because he is well-behaved but he also has a lot of energy and is very funny. I wanted to represent his “craziness” with those. I painted him in dark blue because this color makes me think of him. My mom is represented as a ball with flames, like a comet. I chose to do this because she is remarkable, in a good way, she is going to be seen everywhere she goes. The color I chose for her is a bright color because it’s something that we can see.
My dad is more of a geometric shape, he loves mathematics and informatics so he is more forthright. I still added some organic form to show how sweet he is. I chose yellow for his shape because this color represents him because of his joy and how he always wants to make others happy and laugh. My form is bigger because I am the person holding us together. I did geometric and organic forms because I think I am very logical but I am also open minded and I want to discover the world and be “free”. The color I chose for me is just a color I really like.
To create this sculpture, I started by brainstorming and writing things that make me think about the people I chose to represent. After this I drew some shapes representing each one of us. Then I chose my favorite one for each person and I drew four different forms uniting all of our shapes. After this I chose the one I liked the most and I drew it on four different sides so I could see exactly how the forms and volumes were going to be. I started building a small maquette with paper, glue and tape. After I was done with this, I took all my drawings of the sculpture and my maquette and I started to build the real one with cardboard, glue, tape, and newspaper. After building the sculpture, I covered it with paper mache to make sure it would be sturdy. The last step was to paint it, I chose to paint it with one different color for each person represented.
My idea was to represent the fact that I love traveling and that my dream is to never stop traveling. At first I didn’t know what to do to represent travel, then I thought about airplanes and I got the idea of a cloud. I think I did everything I planned.
I started with cardboard to make the base of the portrait. This step took me a lot of time because I had to do the curved shape of the cloud. After that I used newspaper to create the rounded shape of my head. Then I started using plaster to cover the whole sculpture and make it really hard. This took around 3-4 coats. The last step was to paint it, I tried to make it as close as I could to my tones.
This project helped me to learn to be precise and patient. I think it was hard to get it really smooth and to have a good proportion for the face. I think this project taught me about faces proportions and I think it’s always helpful to know about that.
