The Rule of Thirds is a photography term that is a certain way the subjects in the image are composed. They are composed along lines that divide your picture into three both vertically and horizontally.
For this assignment, we were to research a photographer and use their photographs to inspire our own. I chose a photographer that does mainly portraits, but since I didn't have anyone to model for me, I chose to do self-portraits. From the photographer I studied, I discovered which lighting and poses look best for portraits. The experience was wild and took multiple hours but I am greatly happy with the results. All of my photos are of me, and were taken by me using a tripod and DLSR camera. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Don't forget to click the link to experience the full, larger photo!
Composition: Rule of Thirds
Composition: Fill the Frame
For my photo essay, I wanted to show the different ways art is used in our daily lives. It wasn't my original idea, which was to show the struggles people with depression go through each day, because it was hard for me to come up with ideas for it. It is meant to adjust other's minds to view the art that is presented daily in their lives. Each of these photographs shows different aspects of art and how it's used in my life. In most of these photos, I used a fill the frame composition because I thought it was the best way to show each idea. The close-up images give a real pop to the photo essay. When I did my research, it said to use a variety in compositions but I found multiple close-ups more efficient in expressing my ideas.
The first photograph is a book. I think of books as a type of art because it is a creation of one's mind. I haven't read it in a long time but this is my favorite book called "Lovely Bones". Millions of books are written each day. The photograph underneath that is of my eyeshadow palette. I wasn't super into makeup until recently when I found confidence in myself. It is a way I express my style. I often use vibrant colors for my eyebrows and it is one of my favorite looks. This is the only eyeshadow palette I own and I see makeup as an amazing art form. The third photo is a small watercolor painting I was working on. I can't really afford many art supplies yet but this is the watercolor pallette I bought last year. I have used it quite often. Behind the painting is a brush in some of the water I used. This is another way I express myself, through creation. The photograph of my polaroid camera and pictures is there to show how art can be used as a way of memory. Photographs are one of the best ways to capture memories and they hold great importance to me. The photograph of the cicada is there to show that nature creates its own natural art. The cicada is an intricate creature and one of my favorite bugs. Its wings are probably my favorite part because they remind me of fairies. The last photograph is to show how art is used in advertisements. I went through a perfume phase and during a sale bought 10 VS perfumes. Each has its own unique shape and style. The looks of these perfumes are what drew me to buy them. I liked the design more than the actual product.
For this assignment, we were basically taking photographs to compare different settings on the camera. We took photos using a low and high aperture along with a low and high ISO to show the difference in the end results. We were also assigned to take a forced perspective image, which is putting objects further and closer to the camera to mess with the scale.
ISO 100; Shutter Speed 1/200; Aperture 6.3
This photograph has a small depth of field. I used an aperture of 6.3 which is a larger aperture. Larger apertures allow the subject to be in focus while your background has sort of a blur effect. This is similar to when you focus your eyes on an object and the surrounding objects are blurry.ISO 100; Shutter Speed 1/200; Aperture 6.3
This photo demonstrates forced perspective since both of these boys are decently the same size, but I moved one further back to make him appear smaller. When I did these, I used the setting in the menu and a tripod to capture these images. Our cameras have a setting that says AEB which is a built in bracketing setting.
