For the first drawing assignment in 2D Art, we worked with expressive lines in our art. The emotions I chose to express in my drawings are calmness and happiness. For my subject I chose a person, which is not my strong-suit.
The first drawing uses thin, waving lines that express the tranquility of the ocean. The calm waves inspired me to use such lines. Some are thicker in her hair to show shadows in the reference. The background is the same type of line repeated many times to create rhythm.
The second drawing shows happiness. When I think of happiness I think of boldness and vibrancy. I made bold black lines that wrap around the subject, similar to how an aura would flow around a person. I made her hair a dark filled in space to help with the boldness. I filled in her jacket with thin vertical lines.
I wish I would have chose a different subject because I did not like the outcome of this one. I am not the best with creating people and I have never really enjoyed it. I just thought that since it was the first project I would try to go against what I usually would. I don't hate it but it definitely is not my favorite.
Cubism was a movement in the early 1900s that was heavily influenced and created by the work of Picasso and Braque. The idea of cubism was to go against the rules society had made for art. They threw out any sense of space and used newer abstractive techniques. Cubism shows the subject from many different viewpoints and is often broken into fragments that look like shattered pieces. The art movement heavily influenced later generations and continues to inspire artists.
My drawing reflects cubist ideals by being broken into fragments and merging the subject with the space. I abstracted some parts of the subject matter as well as showing it in different angles. I did change up some of the cubist style to make it my own. To do this, I shaded pretty realistically in some areas but kept the fragmented look. I think it just made it a lot better.
This project was definitely up to my level. I kept my interest in it the entire time and found the process much more interesting than most other artworks. I really enjoyed working with the prismacolor pencils, they blended nicely. I think that this is probably my most successful piece in my own eyes just because it seems more difficult than it actually was for me and I appreciate the time and effort I had to put into it.
For this project, we made prints using linoleum printmaking blocks and carving tools. This unit is based on texture, so we chose a reference that shows texture and recreated that. I chose a Halloween themed pumpkin with a witch hat because I love Halloween and it had ended right around the time I chose it. The texture of the pumpkin was hard to simulate.
The printing process we used was carving the block, rolling the ink, stamping the paper, and repeating. We made relief carvings by carving pieces out of the block. Each layer and different color required a freshly carved segment. The registration of the ink on the paper is what gives us our final prints.
I thought it was a cool process. It was definitely time consuming because of the repeated steps, but worth the end result. I thought it was challenging to make a relief print because instead of adding details you are subtracting them. I think I succeeded at showing the texture of the surroundings and the pumpkin. Overall, this project was really fun and I would like to try similar things in the future.
