The International Thespian Society (ITS) is the honor society for secondary school theatre students. Membership is granted for the performance of meritorious work in theatre arts.
To be eligible for lifetime Junior Thespian membership, students in grades six through eight must attend a school with an active Junior Thespian troupe and complete a sufficient quantity and quality of work in theatre arts. A one-time induction fee is required, and troupes may assess additional participation fees at their discretion. Junior Thespians may earn additional honors for work done after induction. Most Junior Thespian benefits last through the end of grade 8. Graduated students become Junior Thespian alumni and begin their high school careers with half the points needed for Thespian induction.
One of the greatest honors an OTMS theatre student can achieve is induction into Junior Thespians. Thespian membership is granted for demonstration of commitment to theatre arts that meets EdTA's general guidelines. Specifically, students become members by earning points for their work and for maintaining a required GPA (C's or better in all classes).
The Directors and Officers will maintain records of all student activities, and Jr. Thespian membership will be conferred when qualifications have been met. When the required number of points have been earned, an apprentice should be given a membership notification card informing them that they may join the Jr. Internation Thespian Society. Hazing of student candidates is not permitted.
Thespian induction requires thespians to earn points. One point represents approximately 10 hours of excellent theatre work. You must earn 5 points to be inducted into Jr. Thespians. 8th-graders should be able to carry over a limited number of Thespian points to their high school theatre program.
