What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?

A Rube Goldberg machine is an adaption of one step task so that it is over complicated and requires multiple steps to be completed. Think ten plus steps just to turn a book page, or flip a light switch. Click here for a compilation of some Goldberg machines made by others.

Objective

To work with three other students to design and build a fully functional multi-step machine in the style of American cartoonist, Rube Goldberg.

Our Theme

Across our entire board, we kept the theme of childhood and growing up. We used this theme to incorporate a very important message as well. The message is that once kids become teenagers they spend too much time on their phones and fall behind in other areas because of it.

Our Presentation

Once our projects were complete we presented them to engineers in the community.

My Reflection

In the end, I think this project went very well. I  definitely struggled with a few things, but we pushed through them as a group. Our biggest problem was our pulley. We had to make it the perfect distance from the board so that the string didn't fall off. We also had to make sure the weight in the cup was correct so that it would bring up the ball and roll it down the spiral.  This step took roughly 2-3 days to complete which set us behind schedule.  After we worked that out, the project went smoothly without many challenges. Audrey, Khylie, Alana, and I worked well together. We all got along well and had fun while staying on task.  A skill I learned I had during this project is I have some really good ideas that might not have been an obvious solution. An example is when the glove was not scrolling the phone like we had wanted, so I looked it up and learned phones are heat-reactive.  Knowing this, I rigged the foam hand with a hand warmer so that it'd trigger the touch screen. One new idea I would like to bring to my new project is the knowledge that things will go wrong. But that is not a bad thing. In fact, it is a good thing because it forces us to be creative and fix the problem as a team.

Physics Shown In Our Project

Force (F)

The push or pull on an object. This is calculated by multiplying the mass by acceleration. The unit is newtons (N)

Velocity (v)

The rate at which something travels. This is calculated by dividing distance by time. The unit is meters per second (m/s).

Potential Energy (PE)

The amount of energy in an object at rest. This is calculated by multiplying mass, height, and acceleration. The unit is joules (J).

Acceleration (a)

The rate at which something changes velocity. This is calculated by dividing velocity by time. The unit is meters per seconds squared (m/s^2).

Acceleration due to Gravity (Ag)

The rate at which something changes velocity due to gravity. This value is always 9.8m/s^2.

Kinetic Energy (KE)

The amount of energy in an object in motion. This is calculated by multiplying half of the mass by the velocity squared (1/2mv^2). The unit is joules (J).
