Solve a World Problem

 Our Process & Content

For our project, we found a problem with the walkability of specific areas in our city. We researched the problem and possible solutions. To fix this, we came up with two ideas. Build an improved model of this area, or create a system that we can apply to any area to make it more walkable. In the end, we decided to do both. We created a system including sidewalk extensions, more crosswalks, more streetlights, wider sidewalks, green spaces, and clear roadmarkings. After we created this cycle, we created an improved model of Redwood Blvd. in Novato. We then evaluated the walkablity of our model and found that our design increased the safety of the area, but also the visual and mental interest of the area.

Our presentation for our final product emphasized the safety and interest aspects of our design. We each presented a portion of the project, including a Google Maps image of the area we altered, a key of changes made, and reasons why we made ach change.

Walkable Cities

Reflection

I think that one of my strengths during this project was my cultural competency. I was able to address needs in my community and see from multiple perspectives. I had to think about bikers, drivers, and pedestrians when designing a safer, more walkable Novato. I really liked this project, as it involved the engineering design cycle and making a social change. I also really liked my group. We did talk a lot, but we got a lot done in the end. This might be my favorite or second favorite project so far.

One thing I could have done better was leadership and communication. I was not the main leader of the group and didn't contribute a ton to organizing all of the group members. I also couldn't communicate a ton over the weekends and after school because of mock trial competitions. Although, I did procrastinate some of my time over the weekend, which I could have spent communicating and working with my group. Overall, though, I feel like I contributed a good amount to my group.
