Any incoming freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior can apply for the AVID program at Novato High. There is currently one AVID class per grade level.
In order to apply for AVID, you must:
Have at least a 2.5 GPA (3.0 for incoming freshmen).
Complete an application, including a recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
Acceptance into the AVID program will be based off of availability and ability to meet the program requirements.
Yes! AVID qualifies as a college preparatory elective, the "G" subject requirement.
Upon acceptance into the program, every AVD student signs the AVID contract, to the left. Failure to adhere to the contract is grounds for removal from the AVID program.
AVID students are expected to be motivated and determined to achieve university acceptance at the end of their high school career. It will be necessary for AVID students to manage their time so that school and their studies become a top priority. This means that they will need to be responsible for making wise and sometimes difficult choices.
They will be required to:
Maintain a certain GPA
Complete 10+ hours of community service every year
Have good attendance
Have positive behavior in all of their classes
Absolutely not. AVID is an academic elective course, and our goal is to help students to achieve the necessary requirements and skills to be eligible for university acceptance. Students will learn a variety of organization strategies and study tools, practice public speaking, complete academic research projects, and participate in tutorial twice per week.
Tutorial is a mandatory part of the AVID program, and is held twice per week. Prior to tutorial, every student completes a Tutorial Request Form, which identifies a point of confusion in an academic class - something that students are stuck on and need some extra help in understanding. During tutorial, the class is divided into small groups of 4-5 based on subject of need, and students collaborate with each other and with an AVID-trained tutor. The tutor helps to facilitate the student-led discussions to help each student solve their point of confusion.
Through the tutorial process, students:
Create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content classes.
Develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners.
Learn to collaborate with peers.
