I joined AVID during my sophomore year of high school. At that time, I knew I wanted to get to college as a first-gen student, but I had no idea how. My parents had never gone to any level of formal schooling, and my siblings didn't make it past high school. AVID gave me the academic guidance and support I lacked within my household. I can full heartedly say that AVID was one of the three programs that got me to where I am now. AVID didn't see me as the average over-achieving student. They saw me as a student with potential, and they encouraged my individual determination to grow beyond my academic goals.
