For this project we were giving the objective to transport two rolls of pennies (about 250 grams) 5 meters. We would accomplish this task by creating a vehicle or machine to transport the load. Additionally, the load had to arrive at the end of the 5 meters safely and without the use of chemical energy. Most groups chose to build a car, however, my group decided to have a little fun and build a machine which resembles a mounted crossbow. The base of our machine was made out of seven 2x4s, and relied on rubber bands as our source of energy. In order to aim the projectile, we attached a hot wheels track to the crossbow, which allowed it to shoot straight and have minimal friction. At the end of the 5 meters, we utilized memory foam as a soft landing pad in order to fulfill the safety requirement. After some trial and error we were able to find the perfect number of rubber bands in order to consistently land the projectile on the 5 meter mark.
Spring Potential Energy: energy stored by an object stretching or compressing. We found Spring PE by stretching our rubber bands with a scale.
Kinetic Energy: Energy due to motion. We found the KE of our machine and graphed the relationship between KE and time.
Total Energy: We found our total energy by combining the PE and KE.
Thermal Energy: Energy lost to heat. We found this by subtracted our PE and our KE from the total energy.
Distance vs. Time: We made a graph that showed the relationship of distance and time.
Velocity vs. Time: We made a graph that showed the relationship of velocity and time.
Acceleration vs. Time: We made a graph that showed the relationship of acceleration and time.
Rotational Inertia: Rotational inertia means that an object rotating will not stop rotating until stopped by an external force.
Reflection
Overall, I think that the project was a great success . We met all of the requirements for the project and had a great end result. We didn't really struggle with time, so we were able to have fun while making a good machine. On a personal level, I think I have to improve more in is personal contribution. While I helped a lot during the planning and construction phase, I don't think I helped as much as I could have during calculations.
