Outdoor STEM Space

Our Process

After the intergalactic project we moved on to furniture design for the outside space next to our STEM building. Our seniors had deigned for their final project a layout for the spade and our class was meant to design furniture for that area. I had a group with Ava, Dylan, and Parinaz. We started our project by identifying the need of furniture in our outdoor space. Then we brainstormed ideas for what we could put there. We looked at benches and chairs that were realistic and easy to make. My group were deciding on a swinging chair or a bench with a table in the middle. We decided to make a 3d model instead of on paper and put all the measurements there. This let us easily change the blueprints.

We then made a slideshow that showed how cheap out model was, how easy it was to build, and the perfect location where the sun wont be in your eyes. We realized that the sun was going to be on all parts of the space outside. We knew that people probably didn't want to work with the sun in their eyes so we made the bench be facing away from the sun. We also knew people probably don't just want a bench because they would be working and eating there so we implemented a small table in the middle of the bench. We also chose a material that was very smooth and would be nice to sit on so that people would be comfortable while sitting down. Finally, we made sure it was cheap by only buying a few pieces of long wood and cutting them to be smaller instead of buying individual ones. We finally presented it at the very end.

Our Slideshow and Blueprints

This is our slideshow and 3D model below

These are our blueprints we made on paper at the end.

We dont want the bench to be stolen so we were going to dig a small hole where all the legs go and lay down concrete. This will prevent anyone from stealing it and that is why the legs are so long.

Reflection

For this project I was a good communicator and told everyone my ideas and took in theirs. I listened to them talk when they had ideas and told them mine when I had any. I also was a very good critical thinker because when they gave me an idea I didn't just think about it, I thought about the details of the idea and if it would work. I used evidence and reasoning to decide for all of the ideas we were presented. I also did not complain when one of my ideas was taken off because it didn't work. Some areas that I did not do the best on for this project were collaborator because for a lot of the time I was absent because of covid. I finished my slide but could have been there to make some things clear about my ideas about the project. I also could have had a bit better character and be more friendly to some of my teammates. I knew some of them but not all. I tended to dismiss the ideas of the person I didn't know while agreeing with some of the ideas of the people I did know. Next time I will be more friendly and agreeable with my teammates.
