Building Community

Perhaps the most remarkable part of Rinaz's story is her involvement in her community. While she did witness hate towards her kids, Rinaz felt generally accepted by the communities she moved to. Since she was able to speak English, she did not struggle with meeting people and forming connections. In Needham, she was given a platform to share her story at Temple Beth Shalom in an event called Suitcase Stories. Through that event, she met countless community members and felt a sense of belonging. Rinaz also joined various local organizations that promoted diversity, inclusivity, and other values important to her.

Needham's First Ever Multicultural Festival

Thanks to her service on the Needham Human Rights Committee, Rinaz led and organized the first ever Multicultural Festival in Needham. She wanted to shine a light on the many pockets of diversity within the town, and show community members the value of diversity. The event took months of planning, reaching out, and organizing, but in the end, it successfully showcased around 20 countries through information stands, food, music, and life performances.

"We gather here today to share our similarities and celebrate our differences."
