The family traveled from Lesvos to Athens in 1969. When the family was all packed up and ready to go in Athens, Nick caught the Measles which prevented the family from leaving. They had to stay with Thea Koula (a family friend), and after couple weeks of fighting the illness, the family was allowed to get on the boat and begin their journey.
When asked about his experience on the boat ride, Nick didn't even hesitate before saying, "I got seasick." He was sick for the entire boat ride to America.

The boat traveled through Mediterranean waters, across the Atlantic Ocean, for a total of 11 days on the water.
"We arrived in New York Harbor where my Uncle Peter picked us up, and brought us back to his house in Brighton. It was a three family home, so we lived in third unit of the house, all the way up top, for 3 years before we moved to Watertown."
