For the first edition of Club Launch, a program to introduce clubs to Needham High School, I had the pleasure of writing about Own Your Piece/Peace (OYP). OYP was founded almost 20 years ago, in response to a series of teenage suicides over the span of just a few years. The community was deeply impacted by these events. Needham students formed Own Your Piece/Peace to create a support system for each other amidst the tragedy.

Ann Michael Maye and Dave Portnoy’s review of Needham High’s favorite pizza spot, Gianni’s, got me thinking about what other lunch locations deserve more recognition. As sophomores begin to get their licenses and juniors continue to earn theirs, I want to share five of my personal favorite places to eat outside of the typical Chipotle, Starbucks, Pressed Cafe, and Chick-fil-A.

The most treacherous 40 minutes out of any student's day could arguably be an AP in-class essay. 40 minutes to craft a well-argued, perfectly nuanced essay–one that has a clear line of reasoning and cohesive sentences. And on top of all that, students have to battle the overbearing war with typos–which seem to rapidly accumulate over the course of the period.

What did you do during these past few snowy weekends? I, for one, curled up on my couch with my laptop and procrastinated all my homework by binging a show (because that’s obviously the best use of my time). I haven’t quite decided what I’ll watch next, but my choice will most likely be season two or three of Gilmore Girls. On that note, did anyone else think the show “fell off” towards the end of the series, around seasons five to seven? Not saying that they weren't good necessarily, but they were certainly very different from the earlier seasons (and just personally, weren’t my favorite).

“Big brother is watching you,” said one anonymous Needham teacher when asked about Canvas. The implementation of Canvas in Needham High school has been a gray area for students and teachers alike throughout most of the year, sparking confusion, skepticism, and in some cases, blunt resistance. Many teachers and students have even expressed a lack of information surrounding this change. So, why is the new system being introduced in the first place, and why is it causing such a reaction?

On Tuesday, January 27th, many of Greater Boston’s high school students slept in until noon before braving the cold and sledding with their friends. In Needham, however, students and parents woke up hours early to clear their cars, plow their driveways; even before Dr. Gutekanst announced that school would start as usual, most Needhamites knew that would be the case because the superintendent has created a reputation for having school on days that seem to many residents to warrant a day off.

The highly anticipated 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy, have just begun. Just like the 2025 summer Olympics, many Massachusetts natives will take the stage, or more likely the ice, to represent Team USA.
