Marta immigrated to the United States from Poland in 2006 and then got married to her husband Mike Chmielewski, who is from the United States.
Marta moved from the South of Poland. Specifically, she lived in a small town about an hour south of Kraków, Poland. Kraków is one of the largest cities in Poland, primarily known for its historic architecture and cultural leadership.
"When you first arrive, you need a visa. I had a tourist visa, there's different kinds for people who work and for people who get married. I have a tourst visa because I have visited the United States before so I had that in my passport and then we got married and I applied for my permanent residency which is the green card. I recieved that after a few months, and I've been here ever since." (Marta Chmielewski).
"I met somebody, we fell in love, and we got married!" (Marta Chmielewski)
One difficult part of immigrating for Marta was leaving her family and friends back in Poland. "At first it was making the transition to become legal and get a job". Marta also mentions that you have to learn the cultural differences of the new places and how she still struggles with that sometimes today. The main cultural difference Marta experienced with her move to the US from Poland was dealing with the holidays. In Poland, she didn't celebrate Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July, so learning the new traditions in America were a challenge. Driving is also a major challenge Marta experienced. In Poland, she didn't have to drive anywhere because she used public transportation to go everywhere and didn't need a car. She had to get her drivers license in America in order do go to everday places like the grocery store or work. Otherwise, "it was easy because I spoke the language and came with someone that I know well so I didn't come alone."
