Arik had a job opportunity at 32 to come to Boston and start a new company branch. He worked for a company that had to do with safety systems for airport runways, and he would be testing it for Logan Airport. He had to be there for four seasons to ensure the device would work all year round. "We thought of it as an adventure. I had been thinking about it for a while, even before we had the option to relocate." They were young and had only a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter at the beginning of their careers, so the change was doable. "If it were a different place, like France, or Germany, I probably would have thought about it harder, but Boston seemed the perfect place."
When first moving to Boston, Arik and Avital's first house was in Waltham. "We knew that the Israeli and Jewish community was centered around Newton and Brookline and it was important for us to be close to the Israelis and Jewish people to feel home away from home." They found an affordable and nice house in Waltham, close to Newton. Because Ori was still not at the age of going to public school, they weren't too worried about the school system, but they knew that once she got to elementary school, they would want to move to Newton. They eventually moved to Newton, and later to Needham, where they are now.
"When we moved, all we had in the house was a sofa in the living room and a king-sized bed in the bedroom. That's it." Arik had to start working immediately after moving as he was already in the middle of the project. "Ori did not have a daycare yet, we didn't have a car yet and we didn't have internet connection yet." They had to buy furniture, dishes, silverware, food, and everything else, "it was like throwing a person into a washing machine and you either drown or you make it, and we made it, but it wasn't easy."
Alongside the obvious struggles of moving across the world alone, Arik was the first one and the only one to come to Boston from his company. He had no one to welcome him or tell him what to do, he figured it all out himself "from zero".
In addition, Arik and Avital arrived in mid-November, which is already approaching the winter season. They were Israelis who had never experienced the Boston winter, it was a shock.
"Everything combined, it was very stressful."
In the job that Arik initially came to do, he had to work a lot with federal government officials which offered him the opportunity to learn a lot about how the government system works in the new country which he knew nothing about. It was very different than in Israel. Israel is about the size of maybe New Jersey. He found this very interesting, as both Israel and the US had to deal with similar things such as foreign relations, but the US is just so much larger.
Arik worked for the company he originally came to Boston with, Xsight Systems, for 10 years. He had very interesting experiences, especially working with the federal government, and lobbyists, and even appearing on TV a few times. He felt it was time to move on and he found a job at another Israeli-owned company in Boston, Namogoo. He really likes this job!
Avital since coming, has had several teaching jobs as well as starting her own parent counseling business.
Arik and Avital want to eventually return to Israel, "at the end of the day, we feel like that is home for us." Arik, Avital, and their 3 daughters are all dual citizens, and all their extended families still live in Israel. Ori is now going to college, which is another consideration of where to live. "The world is a fairly small place, get on a plane, and within 10 to 12 hours, you're anywhere."
