Like all teenagers in Israel, Avital went to the Israeli army right out of high school. Her role was as a paramedic and she was based in Pardes Hanna. Arik went to university first and later went to the army. He was based in Tel Aviv. He was in the Air Force as a plane engineer. When they met, they were both serving in the military.

He first attended the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, majoring in electrical engineering, and received a bachelor's degree in 1997 before the army. Then, after the army, he went to Tel Aviv University and received an MBA in business in 2003.

She went to Tel Aviv University and majored in educational guidance. She received a bachelor's degree in 2006, and a master's degree in 2008.

They met in 1999 at a wake for Avital's best friend's mom; Avital's best friend was Arik's best friend's girlfriend. Despite the unusual circumstances of their first impressions, they were introduced to each other and immediately felt a connection. After Arik convinced her to do the annual swim across the whole Sea of Galilee, they knew they would be together forever.Â
Arik and Avital got married in 2003, and had their first child, Ori, in Israel in 2006. Avital was still in school when Ori was born working toward her master's degree, and Arik was a commander in the military for engineering specifically in the Air Force.
